Location: Gaithersburg, MD
MedImmune is the worldwide biologics research and development arm of AstraZeneca, a global, innovation-driven biopharmaceutical business that focuses on the discovery, development and commercialization of small molecule and biologic prescription medicines. MedImmune is pioneering innovative research and exploring novel pathways across key therapeutic areas, including respiratory, inflammation and autoimmunity; cardiovascular and metabolic disease; oncology; neuroscience; and infection and vaccines.
We are currently seeking candidates who are working towards obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree in Analytical Chemistry, Chemistry, Biology, Bioinformatics or a related major for an internship during the summer of 2018. This internship opportunity is with the Analytical Sciences department.
The aim of the position is to acquire raw data from spectroscopic techniques such as Raman and Near infra-red (NIR) for purified protein intermediates of differing levels of protein aggregation from a variety of in-process samples and compare the data obtained to the reportable results generated from orthogonal techniques e.g. size exclusion chromatography (SEC) and dynamic light scattering (DLS). All techniques will be run by the intern. This will form the basis for understanding the capabilities of the spectroscopic techniques as non-invasive process analytical technologies (PAT).
This project would be a collaborative project between analytical sciences, bioprocess engineering and protein purification sciences, providing the intern with a strong insight into how biotherapeutic proteins are developed.
To perform laboratory based analytical testing of purified protein samples from process development activities and then summarize the findings in a variety of report formats e.g. PowerPoint presentations, written reports and a poster. In addition, with input from the project supervisor the intern will be coached and mentored in how to design effective experiments and draw sound scientific conclusions from the results obtained.
