Bioprocess Engineering Intern

Location: Gaithersburg, MD

MedImmune is the worldwide biologics research and development arm of AstraZeneca, a global, innovation-driven biopharmaceutical business that focuses on the discovery, development and commercialization of small molecule and biologic prescription medicines. MedImmune is pioneering innovative research and exploring novel pathways across key therapeutic areas, including respiratory, inflammation and autoimmunity; cardiovascular and metabolic disease; oncology; neuroscience; and infection and vaccines.

We are currently seeking candidates who are working towards obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering, Biological Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a related major for an internship during the summer of 2018. This internship opportunity is with the BioProcess Engineering department.

This role is within process engineering team in the development organization, which is responsible for technology development, equipment design, and data analysis across the organizations manufacturing facilities. This position will focus on the development of new technologies that will drive efficiency and consistency in clinical and commercial manufacturing facilities. The individual will apply purification process development, engineering, and manufacturing knowledge to develop creative solutions to problems with a long term strategic focus.

Core Responsibilities:

The primary duties of this position will be to perform laboratory experiments for new technology development. A significant portion of the work will focus on process automation, including electrical wiring and coding.

 
Position Requirements

Position Requirements:

  • Strong problem solving, experimental design and laboratory skills required
  • Preference for laboratory experience in fields of Chemical, Biological, or Electrical Engineering
  • Some knowledge of purification unit operations such as chromatography, viral filtration, and ultrafiltration/diafiltration
  • Experience writing code is required; experience with Arduinos is a plus
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills required to present project work
  • Current undergraduate Sophomore, Juniors
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0+
