Intern: MedImmune Analytical Sciences, Bioassay Intern – Scientist Intern Location: Gaithersburg, MD MedImmune is the worldwide biologics research and development arm of AstraZeneca, a global, innovation-driven biopharmaceutical business that focuses on the discovery, development and commercialization of small molecule and biologic prescription medicines. MedImmune is pioneering innovative research and exploring novel pathways across key therapeutic areas, including respiratory, inflammation and autoimmunity; cardiovascular and metabolic disease; oncology; neuroscience; and infection and vaccines. We are currently seeking candidates who are working towards obtaining a Bachelor degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular and Cellular Biology for an internship during the summer of 2018. This summer internship opportunity is with the Analytical Sciences group. Core Responsibilities: Novel biotherapeutic formats – such as fusion proteins, bi-specific mAbs, and ADCs – demonstrate promising superiority over standard mAb- or protein-based therapies for a wide range of indications. Many novel biotherapeutics engage multiple targets simultaneously and/or demonstrate multifaceted MOAs, which enhance the efficacy, potency, and/or specificity of the therapy. However, due to the complex nature of novel biotherapeutics, thorough characterization of their pharmacology can be challenging, especially in the current era of fast-paced drug discovery and development. The candidate will join a team of scientists who are exploring novel in vitro binding and functional assays that measure the affinity and potency of novel biotherapeutics. The main objectives of this position are to: 1) Evaluate and compare various assay formats that can simultaneously measure multiple target engagement from a single therapeutic, 2) Optimize the select assays and analyses, and 3) Determine the applicability of the optimized assays to other novel biotherapeutics. In accomplishing these goals, we hope to validate and implement these novel approaches for future IND- and BLA-enabling studies, while offering the candidate valuable research and development experience in an industry setting. - Learn and perform in vitro-based biological assays
- Design experiments
- Analyze data
- Record results
- Communicate/present findings at group meetings and at other meeting platforms
