This position will have overall responsibility for all Ventura Foods environmental, health and safety processes. This includes the administration of EHS policies, risk managment, regulatory compliance and the EHS Management System. The Director of EHS is responsible for the development of overall EHS strategies for 12 Domestic and 3 Canadian manufacturing facilities, as well as the Company Headquarters in Brea, California. This position will provide direction for the implementation of key EHS initiatives to ensure compliance across all locations. Director will provide expertise and leadership that will engage the Operational leaders in driving the culture of safety throughout the organization. Director will create policies, procedures and operational guidance that will enable a culture of workforce behaviors directed towards safety, industrial health and wellness, accident prevention, regulatory compliance, environmental management and performance outcomes that engage a connection of the workforce to the Ventura Foods culture and mission to be a zero incident workplace.
Along with senior management, ensure EHS compliance at all locations, commiting to continually improve EHS methods, further define safety methods, processes and organizational structure needed to meet EHS goals. Assist all locations with developing routine site specific EHS action plans to drive improvements.
Implement risk assessment processes and develop risk profiles for all manufacturing sites. Prioritize risk mitigation activities with a focus on eliminating critical risk and lowering overall risk across the organization.
Develop EHS metrics and drive the reporting of these metrics to ensure standardized tracking and reporting across all locations. Monitor EHS performance and benchmark against industry standards. Work with Leadership Team to develop and continually improve leading EHS KPI metrics to ensure proper focus and program direction is attained. Prepare reports, trends, analysis, subject matter expertise and recommendations for critical safety decisions and solutions to address deficiencies, gaps or opportunities for improvement.
Dotted line functional coach to each site EHS leader. Work directly with site EHS leaders to improve knowledge, understanding and execution of EHS standards and best practices. Facilitate routine EHS team meetings and communications. (bi-weekly calls, annual EHS Roundtable, monthly report review, etc.)
Administer Worker's Compensation Insurance Program. Providing assistance to site EHS/HR personnel to ensure effective case management and return to work programs at the site level. Work with insurance company to utilize their risk management services to identify and mitigate occupational safety risks. Participate in claims and business reviews. Drive to reduce Workman’s Compensation costs both in total and cost per claim annually by creating a safer work environment.
Serve as the Planet Pillar and People Safety function leads for the Ventura Foods Corporate Social Responsibility program. Assess, plan and lead environmental and sustainability programs. Participate in 3rd party CSR audits.
Work with Director of Learning and Development to establish and deliver annual Core EHS training plan. Assist manufacturing facilities in developing site specific plans.
Conduct in-person EHS audits/visits at all locations to identify risks and evaluate effectiveness of EHS programs at each location.
Manage EHS electronic records management systems to include Rivo (EHS Management System), Verisk3E (SDS inventory), Brady Link360 (Lockout procedures), ISNetworld (Contractor Safety Prequalifications), etc.
Maintain environmental compliance calendar to ensure timely reporting, monitoring and permit renewals.
Work closely with Ventura Foods legal team on regulatory, insurance and HR issues related to EHS. Monitors changes in all applicable federal, state and local OSHA, EPA, State Worker's Compensation and other regulatory compliance programs.
Facilitate EHS due diligence for divestures, acquisitions and mergers.
Works to develop relationships with all levels of senior management to effectively budget for EHS program needs at both Corporate and site levels. Develop relationships with regulatory agents, vendors, customers and others involved in EHS issues.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
10+ years EHS experience with 5-7 years experience in an industrial manufacturing environment a plus. Bachelors degree in Occupational Safety and Health, Safety or Environmental Engineering, or equivalent a must. Professional certifications such as ASP or CSP are desirable but not required.
Must be familiar with federal, state and local regulations for safety, health and environmental compliance.
Must know workers compensation laws for all states where the company has locations.
Must understand settlement strategies and techniques for worker's compensation. General knowledge of Life Safety Code, NFPA, and various other regulatory requirements, as well as generally accepted industry standards like ANSI, ASME, IIAR, tc. Must be capable of mulit-level communication from shop floor personnel to executive management.
Ability to act as change agent through interactions with others.
The occupational safety, health and environmental exposure faced by a company such as Ventura Foods is easily in the range of hundreds of millions of dollars. It is the responsibility of this employee to advise and assist the management of Ventura Foods in handling this responsibility.
