Head of Core Collection Reference Files

Job Summary:

The Head of Core Collection Reference Files is responsible for managing the Margaret Herrick Library's collection of paper-based and digital material organized in the main categories of film production, biography and general subjects; assessing material for inclusion in the reference files, which include clippings, marketing materials and film ephemera; working with DMS and CCRF team to manage digitization workflow and metadata creation, overseeing the library's web-archiving plan to support collection development; working collaboratively across library departments to establish film title, subject and name authorities and taxonomies. This is a full-time position reporting to the Library Director.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Head of Core Collection Reference Files' duties include supervising of staff members who evaluate, organize and catalog collection materials; supervising of staff members who produce preservation microfilm of collection materials; research and consultation on digital preservation technologies and strategies; implementing collection development policies; determining collecting, indexing and storage processes for paper-based collection materials; working with DMS/IT to determine storage and access for digital materials including digitized items and websites; working within the Academy-wide collection management system to maintain and develop collection databases; planning and managing ongoing inventory projects; other duties as assigned. This position also provides reference services on a regular basis. Serves with other library department heads as a member of the library management team.

 
Position Requirements
  • Master's degree in library and information science or archival studies from an accredited program
  • Minimum five years library/archival work experience and three years supervising a team
  • Expert film history/industry knowledge
  • Expert knowledge of the rules and practices in complex filing systems and archives
  • Experience with databases, integrated library systems, and content management systems
  • Familiarity with preservation techniques, microfilm conversion and digital archive management
  • Strong technology skills, including experience with web-archiving applications such as Archive-IT
  • Familiarity with authority control systems, subject analysis, copyright law and policies
  • Strong service orientation
  • Ability to work effectively with colleagues, administrators and patrons
  • Ability to lead a diverse group in a positive and constructive manner
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to balance multiple projects and effectively set priorities.
