The Mobile Communications and Networking research department at NEC Labs America has multiple intern positions available for graduate students during summer 2018. The group is actively engaged in creating and building novel wireless sensing applications for different industry verticals ranging from retail to smart city to public safety. Our summer projects are aimed at leveraging various wireless modalities (e.g. Bluetooth, Zigbee, RFID, LTE, acoustic, vision, etc.) on static and/or mobile (UAVs, robots, etc.) wireless sensing platforms to create compelling applications in the aforementioned vertical domains. Current research projects include a) solutions using wireless sensing to enhance retail customer shopping experience, b) solutions for smart-city applications such as smart parking and other sharing economy related problems, and c) drone-based solutions for on-demand LTE communication, object localization and environment monitoring to help first-responders during emergency operations. Students will be considered for these projects as well as new projects that are being initiated based on their experience and interest. |
Candidates with experience in developing sensing applications using various wireless technologies at all layers of the protocol stack are encouraged to apply. Knowledge of one or more of the following is a plus: machine learning and classification, basics of digital signal processing, and embedded programming on commodity hardware such as Beagle Board, Arduino, Raspberry Pi, etc. |
