Description

To provide dental assistant and receptionist duties.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Preparation of the clinical area, instruments and materials required for the procedures according to the individual preference of the dentist; assist dentist with client and treatment
  • Responsible for the process of outsourcing dental supplies for reprocessing
  • Follow established guidelines for client identification and privacy
  • Assist during dental procedures under the provision of general anaesthesia
  • Ensure that records and treatment plans are recorded
  • Take impressions and iTero scans; perform prophylaxis and give oral hygiene instructions
  • Provide client whitening using the Level II approved system SpaDent
  • Prepare and store dental impression trays and dental models
  • Take, develop, mount, file and ensure quality control of dental radiographs
  • Ensure lab cases are prepared, documented, sent and received
  • Participates in orientation of dental residents, students and volunteers throughout their term at HB
  • Plays a role in supply management and preventative maintenance
  • Participates in organization-wide quality improvement activities and supports the maintenance of a safe and healthy work environment for staff, clients and families
  • Answer incoming calls, assist callers and relay information; greet, assist and register clients
  • Confirm appointments and relay relevant information to prepare clients and families for appointments
  • Notify appropriate dental team member of client arrival
  • Schedule follow-up appointments with the appropriate dental team member
  • Schedule interpreters
  • Maintain providers' schedules and book appointments to maximize capacity
  • Maintain short notice & recall appointment lists, and coordinate temporary hygienist to optimize scheduling capacity
  • Ensure client charts are organized appropriately before forwarding to Accounts Coordinator for billing
  • Create and maintain accurate and organized client dental files (dictated notes, x-rays, treatment sheets, purge, print forms etc.)
  • Maintain filing system
  • Log and schedule new referrals with appropriate team member and send confirmation information
  • Type dental chart labels, and occasional letters for team members
  • Regular administrative time with the Chief of Dentistry
  • Send and receive mail and packages
  • Process MEDITECH requests
  • Actively participates in morning rounds
  • Participate in our ITI Education Week
  • Coordinate temporary Dental Assistants as required
  • Order office supplies
  • Support the organization's strategic plan
  • Comply with Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation contingency plan, emergency codes, standards and guidelines; participate in accreditation

Other duties as assigned or required.

Education

  • High School or Commercial School graduate
  • Previous dental assisting and reception experience is required
  • Previous experience in a medical environment preferred
  • One year community college in a dental assistant program or equivalent, Level II certification
  • Current knowledge of technology used within the department
  • Update job knowledge and skills by completing WISE e-learning modules

Annual CPExperience

  • Three years relevant experience
  • Experience assisting with dental procedures under the provision of general anaesthesia
  • Experience with x-ray developer, x-ray machine, ultrasonic cleaner, dental operating unit, model trimmer, model mixer, vibrator
  • Well-organized individual to assist staff in a busy multidisciplinary dental clinic

Skills

  • Must be able to communicate fluently in English and have a pleasant telephone manner
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Possess and project a positive, solution oriented outlook
  • Working computer knowledge of (MEDITECH, Word, Excel) with good keyboarding skills essential
  • Knowledge of dental and medical terminology
  • Good teamwork skills but able to work independently
  • Ability to manage a variety of tasks in a busy environment
  • Ability to work with frequent interruptions and prioritize work accordingly
  • Ability to ensure confidentiality in all aspects of the position
  • In partnership with clients/families and the interdisciplinary team, provides client and family-centred care which is goal directed, evidence based and outcome oriented
  • Supports and respects the client/family's rights to make decisions based on their own values, beliefs and experiences
  • Bases practice on established policies and procedures
  • Promotes and supports the physical, psychosocial and spiritual well being of clients and families
  • Communicates in a timely, respectful and effective manner

Certification/Licenses

  • Certified Level II Dental Assistant required
  • CPR Certification required
