Under the direction of the VP of Philanthropy the Major Gifts Officer will play a key role in providing a strategic plan to provide the vision, direction and leadership for donor cultivation, stewardship and solicitation of in-kind support to fund the mission of Opportunity Village which is to serve and enhance the lives of individuals with developmental disabilities.

Through a highly professional demeanor and donor centric methodology, the incumbent will support the RD Team in the implementation of a comprehensive giving program with a primary focus on the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of individual prospects and donors who have the capacity to make meaningful financial & in-kind donations to OV. The Major Gifts Officer will also help drive department-wide projects such as events, annual appeals, data management and meeting ambitious annual fundraising targets.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Conduct research on best practices, suggest content based on a donor’s particular area of giving or interest and will also make recommendations regarding the format of donor reports. Research and communicate emerging trends and best practices in donor engagement and stewardship.
  2. Assist in creating targeted strategies and events to cultivate potential donors, leveraging donor cultivation events with a view to strategically engaging high capacity individuals and growing our donor community.
    • Respond to special needs and requests of donors.
  3. Help develop and oversee stewardship processes to ensure appropriate and accurate recording, acknowledgement, recognition, and allocation of gifts.
    • Execute effective programs to ensure, foster and nurture productive relationships with these individuals.
    • Coordinate an active schedule of individual donor solicitations, cultivation visits, events, and stewardship.
    • Work with the Development team to enhance the donor experience
  4. Collaborate with development leadership by providing data for developing the creation of long-term strategy for prospect identification and development.
  5. Work with the marketing team to support the development implementation and ongoing maintenance of a strategic external annual communications plan that enhances the outreach efforts of the department; including web-based communications, direct mail, event marketing and constituent outreach.
  6. Conduct research on donor prospects and other acquisition strategies that will lead to the expansion of an OV donor base nationally - identifying and prioritizing individual donor prospects.
  7. Implement donor surveys for the purpose of refining and improving reports and other donor communications.
    • Provide primary donor giving patterns to increase donor retention, upgrading, and conversion rates.
  8. Support the comprehensive fundraising campaigns to include; annual giving, endowments, Legacy giving and the capital campaign.
    • In collaboration with the Major Gifts team, raise the funds for the comprehensive campaign.
  9. Participate in meetings of campaign staff, volunteer leadership, Campaign Steering Committee.
  10. Using Donor Perfect software, track and report on all prospect
  11. Maintaining an active current body of knowledge pertaining to a growing constituency of current and prospective donors.
  12. Confirm annual sponsors, steward large sponsors, and identify new prospects which include attendees, sponsors, and in-kind contributors.
  13. Manage a corporate solicitation program to enhance relationships with area businesses for the purpose of promoting corporate matching grants, potential volunteer groups, possible silent/live auction items.
  14. Identify and participate in special networking and other events to develop new relationships and raise awareness of Opportunity Village and the mission.
  15. Steward and cultivate important relationships and seek out appropriate partnerships. Must communicate and report updates to all Resource Development staff all activities associated with this position.
  16. Perform other duties as assigned.
 
Position Requirements

SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Ability to demonstrate positive interaction with diverse groups of personalities.
  • Ability to creatively conceive and write business letters, proposals, etc.
  • Willingness to understand the history of Opportunity Village and draw on it to reinforce donor engagement.
  • Ability to speak in a public forum.
  • Ability to meet goals and overcome obstacles.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers, supervisors, members of management team and customers (verbal and written). Excellent writing and presentation skills are essential.
  • Ability to care, respond and work with individuals with developmental disabilities.
  • Ability to define problems and draw valid conclusions; Ability to interpret instructions, gain knowledge and have initiative.
  • Ability to work independently with little supervision, prioritize workload to meet constant changing demands.
  • Must understand the importance of building life-long relationships; serve as an advocate for donors, alumni and friends.
  • Professional appearance and demeanor required. Must be a self-starter and must be able to take initiative to be successful in this position

  • Demonstrated results in personally identifying, asking for, and securing major gifts. Experience working with high-level decision makers, trustees, and other stakeholders
  • Knowledge of local philanthropic community.
  • Prior experience using Microsoft Office, Excel, familiarity with donor database including events management modules and prospect management systems.
  • Ability to work within electronic environment for solicitation and gift tracking

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Required: Bachelor's degree with a minimum of three years verifiable work experience in the field of fundraising and a strong knowledge of donor relations.
  • Required: Three - five years' experience as a development professional, and in a capital campaign.
    • Emphasis on experience working in donor relations, donor stewardship, event planning and communications within a development or advancement environment.
  • Required: Access to reliable transportation and ability to work evening and weekend work required as appropriate.
  • Preferred: Demonstrated experience the phases of capital campaign fundraising, specifically with community giving phases
  • Required: The ability to work as a partner with individuals with disabilities served by Opportunity Village and an understanding that the people served are respected and deserving members of the community.
