Description

The Ward Summer Student Research program provides an opportunity to experience a unique interdisciplinary mentorship experience. The student will work on a research project, attend our Lunch ‘n' Learns sessions to learn more about childhood disability research, and participate in the Ward Summer Student Research Day.

Dr. Ryan is a Senior Scientist in the Bloorview Research Institute and an Associate Professor in the Department of Occupational Science & Occupational Therapy at the University of Toronto. His research focuses on the development of health measurement scales and the evaluation of assistive technology outcomes.

The student will be involved in projects that relate to understanding the effectiveness of augmentative and alternative communication interventions for children who have a speech-related disability. The student will help with recruitment, data collection, data entry, and analysis.

Key Responsibilities

  • Recruitment, data collection, entry, and analysis

  • Interaction with clients, families and research staff

  • Literature searching and paper writing

  • Preparation of a poster presentation for the summer student research day

  • General administrative and clerical activities to support related projects

  • Additional duties assigned as required

Qualifications

    • Must be enrolled in the final year of an undergraduate degree program in a psychology or health sciences program, or medical school

    • Minimum cumulative GPA of 80% or over

    • Able to communicate effectively with clients, clinical staff, and research team members

    • Ability to work independently while demonstrating accuracy and attention to detail

    • Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize work

    • Experience with statistical packages such as SPSS preferred

    • Experience in research involving children and youth would be an asset

    • Volunteer or work experience with families who have a child with a disability would be an asset
