Description

The Ward Summer Student Research program provides an opportunity to experience a unique interdisciplinary mentorship experience. Successful incumbents will have opportunities to work with their mentor on a research project, attend our Lunch ‘n’ Learns and participate in the annual Ward Summer Student Research Day where they will have an opportunity to present their findings to the organization and its visitors.

We are looking for an enthusiastic summer student to work on our interactive gaming projects for physical and occupational therapies. We use the latest interactive gaming technologies (Kinect 2.0, Leap Motion, and Myo), to push the current limits of technology to help meet our goals. Working with clinicians, engineers and researchers you will be assisting in developing/analyzing/researching interactive video games that incorporate the goals of our clients’ therapies. In this position, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Understand the goals of physical and occupational therapies

  • Work with and refine interactive gaming environments that address these goals

  • Assist in the collection and analysis of data from ongoing research studies

  • Develop software algorithms to track and identify desired therapeutic movements

  • Assist in the development of video games, including but not limited to concept creation, plot development, level design and software development

Qualifications. The following skillsets are desirable for this role:

  • Students must be enrolled in an undergraduate degree program, or medical school
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 80% or over

  • Previous experience working on observational and/or kinematic research studies

  • Previous experience on software development projects, especially video games

  • Technical skills in machine learning, image processing, signal processing, and/or programming (Unity, C++) may be an asset

  • Interest in video games

  • Strong problem solving skills with a desire to learn

  • Ability to work collaboratively as a member of a multidisciplinary team
