Description

The Ward Summer Student Research program provides an opportunity to experience a unique interdisciplinary mentorship experience. Successful incumbents will have opportunities to work with their mentor on a research project, attend our Lunch ‘n’ Learns and participate in the annual Ward Summer Student Research Day where they will have an opportunity to present their findings to the organization and its visitors.

Dr. Deryk Beal is a Clinician Scientist, speech-language pathologist, and director of the CONNECT Lab in the Bloorview Research Institute at the Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital. Dr. Beal’s primary interest is the cognitive neuroscience of speech and language. His innovative research aims to understand the neurobiological and behavioural characteristics of communication disorders in childhood and to develop new treatments for children with these impairments. The summer student will contribute to one or more research studies examining at the neural development of speech and language, the efficacy of neuromodulation for induced neuroplasticity and learning, and treatment outcomes for children undergoing speech therapy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Data gathering, entry, analysis, and report writing with an opportunity for publication

  • General administrative and clerical duties to support projects

  • Development of program materials and assistance with presentations

  • Interaction with clients, families, and staff throughout the organization

  • Additional duties assigned as required

Qualifications

Students must be:

  • enrolled in an undergraduate degree program (3rd or 4th year), or medical school

  • minimum cumulative GPA of 75% or over

  • passionate about cognitive neuroscience, speech, language and brain development

  • able to use skills learned in academic studies from any of the following: psychology, linguistics, neuroscience, statistics, computer programming, and/or engineering

  • able to work collaboratively as a member of a multidisciplinary team

  • aware of the Family-Centered Care service delivery model

  • be accurate, attentive to detail, highly organized and able to meet assigned deadlines

  • have a working knowledge of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel

  • Proficiency in R, Python, or Matlab is an asset but not required. Previous research experience and/or participation in preparation of a research publication is preferred but not required.
