Summary:

Conducts studies on hazardous waste management projects and provides information on treatment and containment of hazardous waste, as well as air and water emissions. Coordinates safe disposal of hazardous waste materials.

Plans and directs safety and health activities in industrial plant to evaluate and control environmental hazards. Inspects machinery, equipment, and working conditions in industrial or other setting to ensure compliance with occupational safety and health regulations. Coordinates activities in training employees.

Is responsible for planning, establishing, implementing, and maintaining a variety of occupational health, safety, environmental programs to assure the highest possible degree of safety for employees. Assures that Astronics-Luminescent Systems Inc. complies with applicable federal and State health, safety and environmental laws, regulations and standards.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Ensures compliance with EPA, OSHA, DEC, Local Regulations and RCRA.

  • Develops hazardous waste rules and regulations to protect people and environment.

  • Assesses available hazardous waste treatment and disposal alternatives, and costs involved, to compare economic impact of alternative methods.

  • Prepares shipments of hazardous waste materials.

  • Develops comprehensive spill prevention programs and reviews facility plans for spill prevention.

  • Develops spill reporting regulations and environmental damage assessment programs.

  • Prepares reports of findings concerning spills and prepares material for use in legal actions.

  • Provides technical assistance in event of hazardous chemical spill and identifies pollutant, determines hazardous impact, and recommends corrective action.

  • Tests noise levels and measures air quality.

  • Trains employees to obtain compliance with regulations.

  • Develops and monitors emergency action plans.

  • Develops and conducts safety training for all employees.

  • Recommends changes in policies and procedures to prevent accidents and illness.

  • Inspects machines and equipment for accident prevention devices.

  • Observes workers to determine use of prescribed safety equipment such as glasses, helmets, goggles, respirators, and clothing.

  • Inspects specified areas for fire prevention equipment and other safety and first-aid supplies.

  • Investigates accidents to ascertain causes for use in recommending preventive safety measures and developing safety program.

  • Demonstrates use of safety equipment.

  • Confers with representatives of management to formulate policies, determine need for programs, and coordinate programs with plant activities.

  • Confers with representatives of local government to ensure cooperation and coordination of plant activities with law enforcement and firefighting agencies.

  • Confers with managers, instructors, or customer’s representative to determine technical training needs.

  • Attends meetings and seminars to obtain information useful staff and to inform management of technical training programs and goals.

  • Must be able to travel periodically for training.

Education and Experience:

A bs degree in Safety Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, or Environmental Sciences, or in a related field is preferred.

Skills:

  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written (training/presentations/report writing).

  • Strong PC skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint).

  • Skilled in the standards, concepts, practices, and procedures with the health, safety and environmental fields.

  • Ability to communicate clearly at all levels within and organization and the ability to work in a diverse work group.

  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills.

  • Be organized, detail oriented and able to multi task.

  • Observe, compare and monitor data to determine compliance with prescribed operating standards.

  • Ability to work cooperatively with outside regulatory personnel (i.e. City, State & Federal Officials).

  • Ability to move heavy/large objects (drums, tanks equipment, etc.) with the use of pallet trucks and/or various drum trucks.
