School Counselor I, II, III

General Job Description

To support the Children's Guild behavior motivation model. To fulfill the IEP requirements of the assigned students in the terms set forth by the IEP and in compliance with all applicable COMAR regulations and to provide team leadership in facilitating team growth and development. Individual, group and family therapy will be conducted routinely within the principles of teamwork and agency philosophies. Participation in the academic classroom and the general community is basic to the role with additional responsibilities for documentation and training. To provide clinical supervision as needed.


The qualifications of this position include the interest and drive to develop the potential of other people and the interpersonal skills necessary to do so. The successful candidate will also possess a value system that is consistent with organization's philosophy and goals, demonstrate leadership skill, be mentally alert, physically healthy and possess the stamina needed to work with children in a dynamic environment. The person in this position must also possess a desire to grow, learn and change, and to serve as a role model.

Academic Preparation and/or Experience:

School Counselor I - Meets the licensing requirements for LGSW or LGPC

School Counselor II - Meets the licensing requirements for LCSW or LCPC

School Counselor III - Meets the licensing requirements for LCSW-C


This position is accountable to the Director of Clinical and Related Services and/or Senior Counselor.


Key Result Area #1: Responding to Mindset in Behavior

This KRA is successfully completed when:

  1. Review student behavioral histories at the time of admissions as assigned.
  2. Pro-active use of behavior management that provides safe spaces for students to regulate their behavior.
  3. Identify alternate behaviors to be taught to the student that align with Individual Educational Plans and Behavioral Intervention plans.
  4. Planning for a student's use of aggressive/violent behavior, prior to the display of behavior in the school.
  5. Maximize the therapeutic impact of each response.
  6. Customizing the response to the emotional and physical needs of acting-out child.
  7. Decision making is child centered as opposed to adult centered.
  8. Methodology of practice aligns to the school's positive Behavior Intervention Model.
  9. Fostering internal controls in order to decrease the frequency, duration and intensity of aggressive/disruptive behavior.
  10. The therapeutic focus is strength based to maximize academic performance.
  11. Careful data collection of student's behavior drives team decisions.

Key Result Area #2: Management of Clinical Services in the Day Schools

This KRA is successfully completed when:

    1. Assurance that parents, families and providers are contacted in a timely manner with information relevant to their student as well as outcomes.

    2. Maintain a caseload in which individual, family and group therapy are offered in accordance with a student's IEP.

    3. Parents are offered the opportunity to be regularly involved in class room parent education groups, parent support groups, and provide opportunities to support their child's class through fund raising, class room instruction, serving as chaperones on field trips, etc.

      Key Result Area #3: Regulatory Compliance

      This KRA is successfully completed when:

  1. Daily practice aligns with COMAR regulations.

  2. All IEP Mandates are fulfilled and tracked in a timely manner.

  3. Home visits as needed

  4. At least fifteen hours of classroom participation weekly along with taking an active role in team primacy.

  5. Regularly communicate with Psychiatrist regarding concerns, improvements, and attendance at med management meetings.

    Key Result Area #4: Training

    This KRA is successfully completed when:

  1. Participate in and graduate from the Children's Guild's Pre-Service Training Program.

  2. Participate in The Children's Guild College of Transformation Education and complete a minimum of 12 Guild Education Units (GEU's) per full year of employment.

  3. Participate in campus in-service trainings and agency in-service trainings.

  4. Participate in weekly clinical meetings

  5. Adhere to The Children's Guild's Policy and Procedures.

    Key Result Area #5: Professional Development

    This KRA is successfully completed when:

  1. Licensing and continuing education requirements are met.

  2. Maintain CEU'S in accordance with Licensure requirements.

  3. Provide training internally or externally as assigned.

    Key Result Area #6: Positive Student Intervention

    This KRA is successfully completed when:

  1. Execute PBIS throughout the program.

  2. Transformation education integrated into clinical practice.

  3. Staff and student culture card fully implemented.

  4. Behavior motivation incorporates the following models and tools:

    Social skills curriculum (skill streaming, second step), measurements (social skills rating scale), collaborative problem solving.

  5. Goals and objectives generated from rating scales are aligned with the IEP and BIP.

  6. Utilization of Experiential Education.

  7. Identify potentially high risk situations and align students' BIP with the IEP goals and objectives.

    Key Result Area #7: Transportation

    This KRA is successfully completed when:

  1. Monitor student transportation issues and address with students.

  2. Notify parent/guardian immediately when student is absent from school, and document.

    Key Result Area #8: Supervision (School Counselor III only)

    This KRA is successfully completed when:

    a. Regular supervision is provided for assigned lesser licensed School Counselors and documented as mandated by regulatory requirements.

    Key Result Area #9: Workplace Conditions

    This KRA is successfully completed when:

  1. Regular coordination with Referral Sources and Parents are conducted and documented.

  2. Successful completion of the Pre-service Training Program

  3. Successful completion and demonstrated competency with the prescribed behavior management program.

  4. Assists team members in crisis intervention.

  5. Shared office space

  6. Forty hour work week, minimum, ten months a year.

  7. Evening meetings as requested and/or needed for parent meetings and/or groups.

  8. All other duties as requested.
