General Description:

The Child and Family Mental Health Therapist is an office based position and provides individual and family therapy to children and their families, including some individual therapy for parents. Therapist provides case management and consultation with PCP’s, Parole/Probation, DHS Child Welfare, self-sufficiency programs, Drug and Alcohol providers, and other community partners. Some evening hours will be required. Eligible clients may be self-referred or referred by PCP’s, County Mental Health, DHS, and/or self-sufficiency. Authorization for services may be required from the CCO or other payer source. Bilingual, English/Spanish, preferred.

Position Requirements

Education and/or Experience:

Master’s or doctorate degree in counseling, psychology, social work, or related field. Knowledge and/or experience providing mental health services, including assessment and diagnosis, to children and families. Knowledge of the impact of trauma and experience working with disadvantaged and high-risk individuals, including work with incest, sexual abuse, physical abuse, drug and alcohol abuse, and domestic violence. Strong understanding of available community resources and supports. Must be computer proficient in a Microsoft Windows environment. Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and record keeping software preferred. Must have respectful, open, unbiased, accepting attitude toward clients and their families. Must be able to qualify as a Qualified Mental Health Professional (QMHP).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Interview client to obtain information concerning family history or other assessment information.
  • Conduct mental health assessments for children and adults, including DSM 5 diagnosis.
  • Develop and implement treatment plans, defining specific measurable goals and objectives, and revise as needed.
  • Provide short-term therapy and case management services primarily in the office, but may also provide services in schools, communities, medical offices and/or in the client’s home. This position may include providing services at a primary care office 1-4 days per week, depending on need.
  • Maintain accurate and current client records, including timely Individualized Service and Support Plans (treatment plans), authorization requests, and daily progress notes within the electronic client record (ECR), and sign documents to meet federal and state regulatory standards.
  • Coordinate access and provision of services from multiple agencies, including establishing service linkages, advocating for service needs, and obtaining entitlements based on mental or emotional disability.
  • Work closely with psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses and their primary care physicians to coordinate treatment.
  • Coordinate case activities with Program Supervisor, DHS/Child Welfare, Juvenile Department, schools, and others as appropriate.
  • Refer client to supportive services to supplement treatment and counseling as appropriate and suggested by parent, guardian and/or DHS/ Child Welfare caseworker.
  • Make requests for authorization for services to the local CCO as required.
  • Attend and participate in weekly individual and group clinical supervision and team meetings, as directed.
  • Coordinate with DHS and the local CCO regarding referrals as directed.
  • Remain current on relevant research and evidenced based practices.
  • Report suspected child abuse and neglect.
  • Maintain client confidentiality according to state and federal guidelines.

Working Conditions:

  • Vision sufficient to read client records and related documentation.
  • Extended periods of time sitting at work station updating client records, phone work and therapy sessions.
  • Ability to stand, work, and drive throughout the day.
  • Mobility, including occasional lifting a minimum of 20 lbs., bending, stooping, and reaching, and dexterity sufficient to assist clients and handle required job related functions and move about the facility.
  • Exposure to communicable diseases found in children and the public.
  • Ability to cope with clients who may use challenging or offensive language with potential for escalation to physical aggression.

Salary Range* $38,000 to $56,000 DOE
