Description

GENERAL PURPOSE OF POSITION:
(1) To strengthen the capacity of UCC settings within the United States - local churches, conferences, CHHSM agencies, institutions of higher education, and their local communities - to welcome resettling refugees; and in preparation, response and recovery from natural disasters and their human-caused components. (2) To promote the identity and function of the United Church of Christ as a whole in refugee resettlement and disaster preparation, response and recovery in public witness and among networks of organizations in the United States active in resettlement and disaster.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Become and remain conversant with the breadth of the United Church of Christ; in particular, programs of Disaster, Volunteer, Refugee and Sustainable Development Ministries (UCC's Global Sharing of Resources) with ability to interpret primary program, intersections with other programs, and partnership goals.

  • Support connections and collaboration of UCC congregations and conferences and other UCC settings with local refugee resettlement offices of Church World Service or of the 8 additional national resettlement networks.

  • Write and promote stories and social media related to refugee resettlement, utilizing the range of UCC and local secular media platforms.

  • Support the national Disaster Ministries network with various tasks in response to domestic disaster

  • Engage and support UCC Conference Ministers, UCC Conference Disaster Coordinators and their Conference Disaster Teams through regular meetings, preparation of training materials and trainings, monitoring long-term volunteers, and facilitating connections with state Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster, FEMA and local Community Organizations Active in Disaster.

  • Represent the United Church of Christ in organizations related to disaster preparation and recovery in the United States, such as National VOAD.

 
Position Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and/or abilities required to perform successfully in this position.

  • A college degree in a related field, or a combination of education and demonstrated work experience.
  • A commitment to and theological understanding of global mission in its broad range of concerns; a person of faith with grounding in the United Church of Christ and its core values.

  • Prior disaster experience in the USA and an understanding of disaster networks and terminology

  • Demonstrated success in training, mentoring and guiding others in disaster preparedness, response and/or recovery work

  • Desire and sensitivity to working in diverse racial, ethnic, cultural and religious settings with commitment to diversity in the workplace as well as in one’s understanding of mission

  • Demonstrated written and oral English language skills

  • Strong interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and collegially as well as independently and confidentially

  • Ability to be adaptable, flexible and work in stressful situations

  • Demonstrated interactive social media, electronic engagement

  • Computer proficiency

  • Ability to travel within the United States (approximately 40 % of work time)
