Children's Library Assistant - 171094 

Location CLP - Main  

Job Summary: Seeking a highly energetic and dynamic person to serve our diverse public in a busy, urban library. This candidate will bring superior customer service skills and perform a variety of tasks to support library services primarily, but not limited to, children ages 8-13 and their families at Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh-Main Children’s Department. This candidate will work closely with the Library Services Manager to execute the Library’s mission through in-house programming that also coordinates with Teen Services at CLP-Main Library.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Serving upper elementary and middle school students by using programming and the collection to build a bridge between Children’s Services and Teen Services at the Main Library;

  • Independently creating, planning and facilitating youth-driven, project-based programs and workshops around Connected Learning models that are designed to build skills in digital media, STEM, the maker movement and new emerging technologies for children, teens, and their families;

  • Providing high quality customer service to a diverse public and staff in accordance with CLP’s Philosophy and Standards of Service;

  • Providing basic readers’ advisory and references services;

  • Communicating with, collaborating with and supporting Children’s Services and Teen Services-related staff at CLP-Main and across all CLP locations;

  • Greeting customers and providing orientation to the Library;

  • Supporting, encouraging and creating a community of readers.

Position Requirements
  • Bachelor’s Degree required; Preferably in Elementary Education or related field;

  • Ability to take direction and work both independently and as a part of a team;

  • Awareness of current Children and Teen bestsellers and literary trends;

  • A strong desire for and experience in community engagement;

  • Demonstrated experience working with patrons of all ages in an urban setting;

  • Ability to facilitate children in creative technology and learning;

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;

  • Knowledge of current technologies and electronic resources; online catalog, Windows and MS Office;

  • PA State Criminal Background Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance, FBI Fingerprint Criminal Records Check and Mandated Reporter Training upon offer of employment.

Full-Time/Part-Time Full-Time  
Work Hours 37.5 hours per week; days, evenings and weekends  
Salary $15.50 per hour
