Orion Drilling Company is seeking a Field HSE Advisor II for the Permian Basin Division (West Texas)

This position has a 5 days on / 2 days off schedule. On call on the weekends.

Applies to all activities and guidelines performed by the Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) Advisor II. This job helps implement and enforce programs regarding occupational health, safety and environmental compliance in the workplace. This job description shall be reviewed as needed.


  • Establishes a supporting role with management in assigned areas.
  • Evaluates trends of incidents, injuries, and near misses that have occurred within the industry, Orion Drilling Company, and the assigned work area, specifically. If an incident trend occurs, the advisor is required to participate in investigations and take preventative measures. Maintains HSE performance reporting data for their assigned work area.
  • Oversees assign work areas and provides support for personnel training, safety inspections/follow-ups, and other HSE activities related to the company, client, or regulatory compliance. The advisor works with department managers/supervisors to offer employee mentoring, coaching and guidance in making safe choices while working to foster an incident and injury free workplace.
  • Required to help facilitate, train, and present materials on HSE performance, incidents, and trend analysis data at Company crew engagement sessions.
  • Ensures the Company maintains compliance with all local, state and federal regulations, and stays informed on proposed regulation changes and emphasis and focus programs. The advisor is the contact for agency inspections and inquires.
  • Must be train the trainer for forklift, manlift, & catwalk to be able to provide training in the areas needed.
  • Case manages incidents in assigned areas and assists in other areas as needed. Conducts investigation with HSE and operations team and keeps supervisor up-to-date as new information is discovered.
  • Demonstrates leadership by inspiring and motivating others within the HSE department.
  • Gives periodic feedback to HSE peers and employees and leaders within their assigned work areas on matters that affect sustaining a world-class safety culture.
  • Other tasks may be assigned as needed.


  • Investigate incidents and take preventative measures to create and improve a safe working environment.
  • Exhibit strong advisory leadership to enforce compliance with company, local, state and federal regulations.
  • Conduct training for company crew and present materials on HSE performance to ensure a safe work place.
Position Requirements

  • Education and Training – An Associate’s Degree in Safety or 3-5 years related experience on a drilling rig; or a combination of education and experience is acceptable. Must be able to obtain a Certified Occupational Safety Specialist (COSS) or higher.
  • Basic Skills - Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Physical Demands - While performing the duties of this Job, the Employee must complete and pass standard Human Performance Evaluation. It is a muscular skeletal standard requirements evaluation including Lifting, Carrying, Pushing and Pulling. here is also a job specific requirement evaluation as noted below:
    • Ladder Climbs
    • Nuts and bolts assembling
  • Working Conditions – This job is normally in a field setting and the noise level varies depending on location; however on occasion the employee will be exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places and outside weather conditions where noise is moderate. Must be willing to travel at least 50% of the time.
