Mid-Level Archaeologist

Redhorse Corporation has an immediate need for a Mid-Level Archaeologist located on Edwards AFB, CA. The Mid-Level Archaeologist will work on-site at the customer’s facility to provide cultural resource management, compliance, and consultation services. Primary duties will focus on working closely with the Lead Archaeologist to provide assistance with curation and cultural resources surveys, evaluations, and reports. The Mid-level Archaeologist will lead projects and author reports per direction of the lead archaeologist, communicate directly with the lead archaeologist, and be involved with tasks that may include monitoring cultural resources; evaluating archaeological sites to determine their eligibility for listing on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP); Native American consultation; maintaining curation of archival materials and the curation facility; updating the existing Edwards AFB ICRMP; conducting Phase I archaeological surveys; conducting Phase II evaluations; maintenance of archaeological data across several databases; and utilization of GIS and GPS. The candidate will augment existing customer capabilities, work in a team framework, and be an on-site specialist to assist with the cultural resources program.

Duties and responsibilities for the Mid-Level Archaeologist include:

  • assisting with cultural resources management by performing professional archaeological, historic and cultural studies, such as contextual studies, installation or structure histories, oral histories, and ethno historical studies;
  • performing archaeological inventory and evaluation;
  • preparing archaeological site monitoring and protection;
  • preparing archaeological research designs for testing and data recovery;
  • preparing preservation and/or stabilization plans for archeological/cultural sites and historic buildings;
  • supporting preparation of NAGPRA Plans of Action and Comprehensive Agreements;
  • providing tribal consultation support;
  • preparing National Register of Historic Places nomination packages;
  • supporting preparation and at least annual updating of ICRMP;
  • performing cultural resources sample or modeling surveys; and
  • providing archaeological collection processing, curation, and assessment support, including payment of annual or other curation fees to facilities IAW extant curation agreements.
Position Requirements

Minimum Basic Requirement for Skills, Experience, Education and Credentials:

  • Must have at least a Bachelor’s degree in anthropology or archeology. Or a MA in archaeology or related degree and be qualified per Secretary of Interior’s Professional Standards and Guidelines as outlined in the Code of Federal Regulations - 36 CFR Part 61
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience working in the Great Basin in Archaeological survey and/or excavation
  • Must have work history conducting archaeological field work and curation work
  • Must have experience working with the Department of Defense (DoD)
  • Demonstrated ability to carry research to completion, for example, by authoring reports of survey, excavation, artifact analysis, or method and theory
  • Candidates for this position must be able to work in changing physical conditions:
    • in extreme climatic conditions and rapidly changing temperatures;
    • must be able walk over long distances and across of variety of terrains, including uneven surfaces;
    • must be able to climb, jump, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl;
    • must be able to lift and carry up to 30 lbs across a distance of as much as 30 yards;
    • must be able to work with minimal supervision;
    • must be able to use GPS technology, read maps, and be skilled in North American compliance Archaeological techniques and practices.

Additional Preferred Requirement for Skills, Experience, Education and Credentials:

  • Working knowledge of National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), the Archaeological Resources Protection Act (ARPA), Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA); other applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations; and related DoD and AF directives (including DoDI 4715.16; DoDI 4710.02; and AFI 32-7065)
  • Ability to juggle multiple priorities and meet deadlines
  • Well-developed verbal and technical report writing skills
  • Working knowledge of standard office computer software (e.g. Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access, etc.)
  • Working knowledge of GIS computer software (ArcGIS)
  • Experience working in the Mojave Desert and the ability to work long days in a wide range of weather conditions
  • Knowledge and experience with mapping software (ArcMap)
  • Experience navigating and collecting data using GPS technology
  • Must possess or be able to obtain a standard California Driver’s License, be able to work in extreme climatic conditions, be able to walk long distances, work with minimal supervision, use GPS technology, read maps, and be skilled in North American compliance Archaeological techniques and practices
  • Upon hiring the applicant must be able to pass a federal background check required prior to gaining access to unclassified government computer work stations
