Description

Redhorse Corporation is hiring a Lead Archaeologist located on Edwards AFB, CA. The Lead Archaeologist will work on-site at the customer’s facility to provide cultural resource management, compliance, and consultation services. Primary duties will focus on leading the archaeology team, acting as senior scientist/project manager, and collaborating with the principal investigators on field work, research, report writing and QA/QC review. The Lead Archaeologist will communicate directly with the client, manage work assignments to team members, and provide technical oversight and mentorship. The project tasks may include monitoring cultural resources; evaluating archaeological sites to determine their eligibility for listing on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP); Native American consultation; maintaining curation of archival materials and the curation facility; updating the existing Edwards AFB ICRMP; leading a field crew while conducting Phase I archaeological surveys; conducting Phase II evaluations; maintenance of archaeological data across several databases; utilization of GIS and GPS. The lead will augment existing customer capabilities, and be an on-site lead specialist to facilitate the cultural resources program.

Responsibilities for the Lead Archaeologist include:

  • assisting federal employees in their duties as Installation or local/regional Air Force Cultural Resource Managers, and performing professional archaeological, historic, and cultural studies, such as contextual studies, installation or structure histories, oral histories, and ethno historical studies;
  • performing archaeological inventory and evaluation; archaeological site monitoring and protection;
  • preparing archaeological research designs for testing and data recovery;
  • preparing preservation and/or stabilization plans for archeological/cultural sites;
  • supporting preparation of NAGPRA Plans of Action and Comprehensive Agreements;
  • providing tribal consultation support;
  • preparing National Register of Historic Places nomination packages;
  • supporting preparation and at least annual updating of ICRMP;
  • performing cultural resources sample or modeling surveys; and
  • providing archaeological collection processing, curation, and assessment support, including payment of annual or other curation fees to facilities IAW extant curation agreements.

 
Position Requirements

Minimum Basic requirements for Skills, Experience, Education and Credentials

  • Master’s degree in Archaeology or related degree and be qualified per Secretary of Interior’s Professional Standards and Guidelines as outlined in the Code of Federal Regulations - 36 CFR Part 61;
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience working in the Great Basin in Archaeological survey and/or excavation;
  • Must have work history leading and conducting archaeological field work;
  • Must have experience managing teams and working directly with client;
  • Must have strong leadership, communication, and project management skills;
  • Has provided QA/QC review of field documents, site forms and reports;
  • Has completed all aspects of a project, from pre-field tasks to final report preparation;
  • Must have experience working with the Department of Defense (DoD);
  • Must possess or be able to obtain a standard California Driver’s License;
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment background investigation in order to obtain a Common Access Card and access to government information technology systems; and
  • Candidates for this position must be able to work in changing physical conditions:
    • in extreme climatic conditions and rapidly changing temperatures;
    • must be able walk over long distances and across of variety of terrains, including uneven surfaces;
    • must be able to climb, jump, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl;
    • must be able to lift and carry up to 30 lbs across a distance of as much as 30 yards;
    • must be able to work with minimal supervision;
    • must be able to use GPS technology, read maps, and be skilled in North American compliance Archaeological techniques and practices.
