GOAL:

To engage internal and external audience, increase the visibility and profile of the United Church of Christ, and position the organization as the “go to” source in the domain of religion and justice; to assist the UCC in becoming the organization of choice for those wanting to support, volunteer, or donate to support the mission of the church.

GENERAL PURPOSE OF POSITION:

The Director of Marketing, & Philanthropy is responsible for the development of all marketing and fundraising strategies to increase public awareness of the United Church of Christ, energetically engage audience, and inspire philanthropic support. The Director of Marketing & Philanthropy will build and manage brand identity and all aspects of marketing communication to raise awareness of the organization and its ministries, engage the global community, and lead the effort to curate the story that is the United Church of Christ.

The Director will provide oversight for executing the organization's strategic fundraising agenda to achieve and exceed its revenue goals through the solicitation of individual, organizational, and foundational support and grants, all while building capacity to effectively further the mission of the organization.

The Director is responsible for planning, developing and executing all marketing strategies, communications, and public relations activities, both external and internal. Directs the efforts of the Marketing & Philanthropy team and coordinates at strategic and tactical levels with other departments and ministries of the denomination. Ties all activity back to organizational goals and is responsible for tracking, measuring and reporting milestones. Key point of contact for all major internal and external relationships regarding messaging and branding. Oversees the process of content curation relative to gathering, organizing, and disseminating the story of the UCC. Chief translator, navigator, and messaging coach for the national office.

The Director guides the creation and implementation of a comprehensive philanthropy program that leverages the marketing platform to inspire participation, generosity and enthusiasm throughout the United Church of Christ in every setting. Leads the national setting in establishing a new culture of philanthropy and engage every expression of the denomination in reconsidering the gifts of God, and how we activate and steward them.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Marketing and Identity

  • Curates the story and identity of the UCC by developing, implementing, and evaluating an integrated annual marketing plan to include brand management, media relations, communications, and public/partnership outreach that engages social media, print and digital content, and effectively promotes the denomination, engages donors, and educates internal and external partners about the mission, vision, and strategies of the wider church.

  • Creates a marketing/communications/public relations strategy to support UCC leadership in cultivating and enhancing meaningful relationships with targeted, external audiences, including media, public officials and key influencers.

  • Supports and coordinates the curation of the UCC identity by developing a team of story-tellers and social media producers external to the National Setting, leveraging these networks to circulate the formative identity of the United Church of Christ; ensures that identity, messaging, marketing and communication strategy are infused in all denominational efforts (programming, philanthropy, ministry support).

  • Cultivates and manages working relationships with key press and media resources; serves as Publisher of United Church News.

  • Supervises the UCC digital content catalogue, directing online strategy and digital content for web and social media

  • Identifies critical marketing resources that can be utilized by the covenant partners of the United Church of Christ; catalogue and warehouse those resources on a user friendly, accessible, and interactive web page housed at ucc.org.

Philanthropy

  • Creates and oversees a fund development plan that includes short and long term strategies to accomplish philanthropic goals, providing strategic direction to Marketing & Development staff relative to fundraising appeals and events and engaging National Staff as appropriate.

  • Leads denomination-wide philanthropic initiatives, establishing specific goals for each; invites and receives gifts in support of the mission of the UCC and collaborates with leadership to nurture philanthropy in other settings.

  • Collaborates with other expressions of the church in developing and presenting the case for giving, and develops and makes available stewardship programs that promote the financial well-being of all settings of the church.

  • Manages the execution and delivery of all campaign deliverables, working with appropriate staff to ensure timely delivery.
 
Position Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and/or abilities required to perform successfully in this position.

  • College degree or equivalent combination of education and experience in a related field (such as communications, marketing, or philanthropic studies) required, graduate degree highly preferred; Certificate of Fund Raising Executive ideal.

  • Minimum of 5 years experience in marketing, communications, development, public relations, or any combination of these, with demonstrated success, preferably in the not-for- profit sector.

  • Demonstrated competence in philanthropy including planned giving, capital or other campaigns, special gift solicitation, grant writing, development and maintenance of ongoing relationships with foundations, preferably in the context of faith communities.

  • Demonstrated management skills, including financial management, personnel management and general business administration.

  • A clear and enthusiastic communicator, a strong and creative writer, and a great team builder across departments.

  • Strong media knowledge and marketing savvy with demonstrated experience writing press releases and creating presentations.

  • Experience overseeing the design and production of print materials and publications.

  • Proficient in technology and current trends, including social media.

  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of the United Church of Christ, its history, diverse theology, traditions, heritage, and polity, especially its commitment to prophetic ministry in the church and society.

  • Desire and sensitivity to work in diverse racial, ethnic, cultural and religious settings with commitment to diversity in the workplace as well as an understanding of mission.

  • Ability and willingness to travel as necessary.
