Biological Field Technician - Seasonal

Redhorse Corporation has a need for seasonal Biological Field Technicians on a task with the U.S. Army Department of Public Works at Fort Irwin, CA.

Role and Responsibilities of the Biological Field Technician

  • Conduct vegetation surveys within Lane Mountain milkvetch and desert cymopterus populations of Fort Irwin and surrounding areas as directed by full time permanent staff.
  • Graph trends in plant mortality or survival rates based on multiple years of data collected in the field.
  • Assist with the writing of clear, concise reports on the findings of the natural resources inventories that are submitted to meet deadlines and that meet requirements of the Army client.
  • Work long days in sometimes inclement weather in rough, rocky, and desert terrain and collect data in extremely windy, hot, cold, or dusty conditions.
  • Follow established survey protocols.
  • Assist with events designed to educate the public and military about desert ecology and conservation.
  • Occasionally assist other permanent staff with other springtime Natural Resource projects/surveys as needed, potentially including: fringed-toed lizard surveys, Mohave ground squirrel surveys, pre-construction flora/fauna inventories, and springs/seeps monitoring.
  • Work well in a military environment and adhere to all U.S. Army rules and regulations associated with personal conduct.
Position Requirements

Basic Requirements, Skills, Credentials and Experience include:

  • Bachelor of Science (BS) in biology, botany, ecology or other biological science undergraduate degree.
  • At least 1 year of experience conducting biological field work.
  • Must have an aptitude for field data collection and the ability to clearly summarize data.
  • Must pass basic background check to gain access to a military installation.
  • Experience working in the Mojave Desert ecosystem.
  • Excellent plant identification skills for species common to the Mojave Desert or experience in plant identification in other desert ecosystems with an aptitude for learning new plant species quickly.
  • Experience conducting general natural resource inventories, and/or experience Fort Irwin’s other special status species (Lane Mountain Milkvetch, Desert Cymopterus, Mojave Fringe-Toed Lizard, Burrowing Owl, Mohave Ground Squirrel).
  • A working knowledge of standard office computer software (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access).
  • Experience navigating and collecting data using GPS technology.
  • Experience operating 4x4 vehicles on unimproved dirt roads.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
