Summary

The Director of Philanthropy is responsible for institutional leadership, strategic planning, coordination and implementation of all fundraising activities, including the generation of financial support through contributions for annual support, restricted projects and capital projects, and for endowment. The development programs include annual giving, major gifts, planned giving and corporate and foundation relations. The position participates as a member of the Museum's senior staff, serves as the staff liaison to the Development Council of the Board of Trustees, and reports directly to the Executive Director. It is considered one of the key leadership positions within the organization as well as having a significant ambassador role in local, national and international communities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • In concert with the Museum's overall strategic plan, develop a comprehensive strategic development plan clearly detailing goals, objectives, and budgets consistent with the vision and mission of the Desert Museum.
  • Oversee the successful deployment of all unearned income revenue generating programs from plan preparations, preparation of proposals and donor cultivation, to donor recordkeeping, solicitation, donor recognition and follow through. This includes all sources; individual, corporate, foundation and government grants, as well as planned giving.
  • Oversee all aspects of major and annual gift acquisition. Participates in direct cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of donors and prospects.
  • Overall annual fund and capital campaigns management and organization including pipelines, prospect tracking, strategy, task assignment and maintenance of timelines.
  • Participate in coordination of annual Gala, with focus on generating sponsorships and table underwriting and donor or prospective donor attendance. Coordinates the live auction portion of the event.
  • Provide management for the day-to-day operation of the department -- directs planning, goals setting, staff management and record keeping functions.
  • Support and partner with the Leadership Team and Board of Directors on all major fundraising initiatives. Function as a key member of senior management team.
  • Coordinate and supervise the acknowledgement process for all gifts and grants. Oversees donor recognition efforts, onsite recognition, annual report recognition to ensure that all who give to the Museum are part of a well appreciated family of donors. Work to create deeper ties with donors.
  • Educate staff, volunteers, and Trustees about giving and philanthropy
  • Work as a team with the Marketing department to identify marketing strategies and compile information for the Annual Report. Insure all development collateral materials are cohesive with overall Desert Museum marketing.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Manages volunteers and a Development Officer/Grant Writer and Donor Event Coordinator. Is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of these staff. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university, advanced degree preferred and minimum ten (10) years progressively responsible experience in fundraising (managing and forging relationships with multiple donor sources) with a demonstrated track record of meeting or exceeding revenue goals. Five (5) or more years of successful staff management experience.

  • An understanding of information systems and the ability to set up an efficient and productive infrastructure that supports fund raising activities

  • Understanding and knowledge, or demonstrated ability to learn, of the donor community for Tucson and southern Arizona
  • Demonstrated leadership and interpersonal skills
  • Strong organization and communication skills
  • Strong written communications skills; ability to write clear, structured, articulate, and persuasive proposals
  • Ability to work independently without close oversight, but also a team player who will productively engage with others at varying levels of seniority within the Museum
  • Collaborative management style. A leader who can positively impact both strategic and tactical fundraising initiatives
  • Willingness and availability to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends and holidays when necessary
  • Satisfactory background check, including but not limited to criminal background and driving record screening
  • Bilingual preferred
