Job Summary

The Chief Curator manages the Curatorial Department and all aspects of its operations, working in collaboration with all departments of the Museum. The position is responsible for the conceptualization and realization of a range of museum exhibitions and installations, as well as overseeing the research and development of all curatorial projects. The Chief Curator is a key member of the museum team that establishes the artistic vision for the institution.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Management of Curatorial Department staff, policies, procedures, and budgets
  • Responsible for organizing and running curatorial department meetings
  • Organizes exhibitions of different scales, ranging from major thematic or monographic shows to more focused exhibitions as well as artist projects and commissions
  • Development and implementation of a comprehensive, long-range collecting plan in collaboration with the Director of the Museum and Deputy Director of Creative Content and Programming
  • Works closely with Deputy Director of Creative Content and Programming and Head of Registration and Collection Management to ensure coordination of processes, procedures, and information related to collection
  • Works closely with the Museum Director, Deputy Director of Creative Content and Programming, and Director, Exhibition Planning and Coordination to determine exhibition schedule and ensure coordination of processes, procedures, and information related to exhibitions
  • Be a key spokesperson for the Museum's collection and the exhibitions, able to engage the public and disseminate knowledge related to Museum initiatives and film history in general
  • Oversees and cultivates contacts with filmmakers, artists, scholars, curators, critics, authors, and other colleagues in the field and culture in general
  • As required, the incumbent works with Advancement staff to cultivate individuals, corporations, and foundations that may donate funds and/or goods and services in support of the museum's exhibitions
  • Performs other duties as required

    Position Requirements
    • MA in film studies, museum studies, or related field, supported by significant scholarship in the field including exhibitions, publications, and acquisitions
    • At least 10 years of progressively responsible curatorial and museum management experience;
    • A strong professional track record in museum administration, strategic planning, and building collaborative relationships, with demonstrable results;
    • Demonstrated experience conceptualizing, researching, planning, installing, and touring international loan exhibitions
    • Demonstrated experience working with artists and filmmakers on projects and/or exhibitions
    • The incumbent is expected to have expertise in contemporary art related to film installation and/or moving image installation
