Receives and processes written and verbal work requests from customers to enable the assignment and distribution of work to the mechanical lab. Complies data and writes technical reports for customers. Performs non-routine and complex assignments involving responsibility for planning and conducting a complete project of relatively limited scope or a portion of a larger and more diverse project, selects and adapts plans, techniques, designs, or layouts, contacts personnel in related activities to resolve problems and coordinate the work, reviews, analyzes, and integrates the technical work of others. Works closely with laboratory manager to maintain database: schedule jobs, recording data and compiling reports for customers. Because of the critical nature of the support provided, extended working hours (including shift work, weekends and holidays) are often mandatory.
The Engineering Technician/Planner/Scheduler receives initial instructions, equipment requirements, and advice from a senior technician, laboratory engineer, or manager as needed. Using the information provided, determine and schedule the work flow of the lab. May assist in performing recurring work and work is reviewed for technical adequacy or conformance with instructions. Maintains contact with laboratory professionals, senior technicians, and customers routinely.
Maintain database: schedule jobs, recording data and compiling reports for customers utilizing MS Office Suite or Lab Inventory Management System.
Produce charts and graphs as required for reporting.
Assists in conducting research, tests, and analyses on material properties, processes, and test equipment for engineering and manufacturing customers.
Assist in conducting failure and stress analyses of material.
Assist in researching, designing and developing new concepts and technologies for incorporation into materials, processes and equipment.
Assist in developing, maintaining and interpreting material and process specification and standards.
Assist in assembling, calibrating, improving and performing operator based maintenance on test equipment.
Assist in analyzing product failure data and laboratory test results in order to determine causes of problems and develop solutions.
Assist in preforming specimen fabrication to meet customer and standard requirements.
Assist in determining test requirements, equipment modifications, test procedures, and work instructions for special or unique test designs.
Assist in preform material testing within a range of environmental conditions.
Assist in maintaining lab documentation, organized test matrixes, and coordinated support for safety leaders, property management personnel, and customer contacts.
Assist in designing, developing, and constructing major units, devices, or equipment; conducts tests or experiments; analyzes results and redesigns or modifies equipment to improve performance; and reports results.
From general guidelines and specifications (e.g., size or weight requirements), assist in developing designs for equipment without critical performance requirements that are difficult to satisfy such as engine parts, research instruments, or special purpose circuitry. Assist in analyzing technical data to determine applicability to design problems; selects from several possible design layouts; calculates design data; and prepares layouts, detailed specifications, parts lists, estimates, procedures, etc. May check and analyze drawings or equipment to determine adequacy of drawings and design.
Assists in planning tests to evaluate equipment performance. Determines test requirements, equipment modification, and test procedures; conducts tests using all types of instruments; analyzes and evaluates test results, and prepares reports on findings and recommendations.
Receives work assignments from and works under the close supervision of a senior technician, supervisor or laboratory manager. Performs tasks to an established schedule and complies with instructions and time/completion data estimates established by the Laboratory Work Request.
Receives technical assistance and training from laboratory professionals or senior technicians as required.
May interface with customers in resolving technical problems and conflicting schedules.
Writes and/or revises procedures and forms as directed and under the supervision of laboratory supervisor or senior technicians.
Maintains compliance with company Quality Assurance and Safety policies and procedures and government quality accreditation policies and procedures.
Conducts a variety of tests using established methods. Prepares test instrumentation, adjusts and operates equipment, and records test data, pointing out deviations resulting from equipment malfunction or observational errors.
Extracts technical data from various prescribed but non-standardized sources. Processes the data following well-defined methods including elementary algebra and geometry and presents the data in prescribed form.
