Description

PURPOSE:
The School Based Therapist promotes and enhances the overall academic mission by providing services that strengthen home/schools/community partnerships and alleviate barriers to learning. The School Based Therapist significantly contributes to the development of a healthy, safe and caring environment by advancing the understanding of the emotional and social development of children and the influences of family, community, and cultural differences on student success and by implementing effective intervention strategies.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Use knowledge and understanding of the reciprocal influences of home, school, and community to intervene for student success via crisis intervention, home visits, conflict resolution, individual and group counseling, consultation to school personnel, and coordination of school and community services.
  • Conduct mental health assessments to effectively and appropriately assess and address the needs, characteristics and interactions of students, families, school personnel and community. Use assessment results to identify needs that impact student learning and develop therapeutic goals consistent with curriculum: students’ needs, strengths, diversity and life experiences; and social and emotional factors.
  • Develop individual behavior plans for each child with staff, clinical supervisor, and school personnel, when appropriate. Each plan will include goals, objectives and interventions.
  • Provide direct observation of children within the classroom. Participate in 1:1 interventions as necessary in order to encourage the children’s compliance with classroom expectations. Assist school personnel and family to identify issues which impede the child’s successful social and emotional behavior and create a treatment plan that addresses these issues.
  • Promote services to students and their families within the context of multicultural understanding and competence that enhance families’ support of students learning experiences.
  • Provide in school individual therapy using cognitive behavioral therapy and motivational interviewing to help improve of children’s overall functioning and ability to access education. Provide family therapy as appropriate.
  • Assist students and their families to gain access to formal and informal community resources.
  • Consult on such issues as attendance, confidentiality, ethnicity and diversity, mental health, substance use, behavior management, discipline, crisis intervention and child abuse and neglect.
  • Plan, implement, and facilitate therapeutic groups or social skills classes with students on a regular basis, when appropriate.
  • Ensure all paperwork is completed in a timely and accurate manner.
  • In addition to the above, any other responsibilities appropriate to the position and not specifically listed in the job description.
 
Position Requirements

Master’s degree in counseling/psychology or related field required; two years of experience working with children and families preferred; and Child Mental Health Specialist and licensure preferred. Experience and knowledgeable in working with children with social, emotional, behavioral and mental health issues ages K-6 preferred; and experience in working with schools, mental health and other social services preferred. Prefer experience in co-occurring disorders treatment, and individual and group therapy. Requires valid WA State Driver’s License in good standing, and reliable, insured transportation.
