General Description:

The Mental Health therapist provides individual and family therapy, group therapy to children, families and adults, and may also provide case management and consultation with PCPs, schools, DHS Child Welfare and Self Sufficiency programs, and other community partners. Treatment may be provided in a mental health office setting, in the preschool classroom or in clients’ homes. The Early Childhood Therapist specializes in providing therapeutic services to children primarily ages 5 and under and their families.

Position Requirements

Education and/or Experience:

Master’s or doctorate degree in counseling, psychology, social work, or related field. Licensure or pursuit of licensure is required. Knowledge and/or experience providing mental health services, including psychosocial assessment and diagnosis, including DSM V diagnosis, treatment plans and progress notes. Knowledge of parenting skills/techniques and child development, and experience working with disadvantaged individuals and high-risk families, including work with incest, sexual abuse, drug and alcohol abuse, and domestic violence and trauma. Strong understanding of available community resources and supports. Must be computer proficient in a Microsoft Windows environment. Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and record keeping software preferred. Must have respectful, open, unbiased, accepting attitude toward clients and their families. Bilingual – English/Spanish preferred. Knowledge of DC-03 a plus.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Interview client to obtain information concerning family history or other assessment information

  • Conduct mental health assessments for children and adults, including DSM-5 diagnosis
  • Develop and implement treatment plans, defining specific goals and objectives, and revise as needed.

  • Provide short-term therapy and case management services in the office, schools, communities, or in the client’s home

  • Provide practical in-home services and support to clients /families designated as ICTS, when needed, to promote, maintain, or restore successful community living.

  • Maintain accurate and current client records, including timely Individualized Service and Support Plans (ISSPs, treatment plans, authorization requests, and weekly progress notes within the electronic client record (ECR), and sign documents to meet federal and state regulatory standards.

  • Coordinate access and provision of services from multiple agencies, including establishing service linkages, advocating for service needs, and obtaining entitlements based on mental or emotional disability

  • Work closely with psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses and their primary care physicians to coordinate treatment.

  • Coordinate case activities with Clinical Supervisor, DHS/Child Welfare, Juvenile Department, schools, and others as appropriate

  • Refer client to supportive services to supplement treatment and counseling as appropriate and suggested by parent, guardian and/or DHS/ Child Welfare caseworker

  • Make requests for authorization for services to the local CCO as required
  • Attend and participate in regular clinical supervision and team meetings, as directed
  • Coordinate with DHS and the local CCO regarding referrals as directed
  • Remain current on relevant research and evidenced based practices

  • Report suspected child abuse and neglect

  • Maintain client confidentiality according to state guidelines

Working Conditions:

  • Vision sufficient to read client records and related documentation
  • Extended periods of time sitting at work station updating client records, phone work and therapy sessions
  • Ability to stand, work, and drive throughout the day.
  • Mobility, including occasional lifting a minimum of 20 lbs., bending, stooping, and reaching, and dexterity sufficient to assist clients and handle required job related functions and move about the facility
  • Exposure to communicable diseases found in children and the public
  • Ability to cope with clients who may use challenging or offensive language with potential for escalation to physical aggression.

Salary Range* $38,000 to $56,000 DOE
