Description

SHIFT: 7am-3:30pm

PURPOSE:
Provide on-going assistance to clients in the Youth Inpatient Unit while maintaining a safe and therapeutic work environment. To take appropriate measures for assisting clients in meeting their daily basic needs for health and safety. To assist in meeting client treatment objectives as directed by the treatment team. To provide appropriate documentation as required by KMHS policies and procedures.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Take appropriate measures to meet client daily basic needs for health and safety including but not limited to the following tasks: a) prepare and serve meals, b) conduct safety checks of the YIU unit, c) monitor clients according to the assigned levels of observation, d) assist in maintaining a clean work environment, and e) other duties as assigned by a supervisor.
  • Complete all required electronic and paper charting, documentation and data entry of clients as outlined in the appropriate KMHS guidelines, manuals, policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrate verbal de-escalation skills as outlined in MPAC and other agency-mandated trainings. Demonstrate competency in the use of mechanical restraints
  • Participate in clinical activities as directed by a supervisor including but not limited to: a) facilitate approved group activities, b) conduct ongoing observation and evaluation of client mental status during each shift, c) record client nutritional intake, sleep and vitals, d) follow specific behavioral protocols for clients as directed by a supervisor, and e) other clinical activities as directed by a supervisor.
  • Complete all paperwork involved in providing direct client care including but not limited to: a) paperwork relating to admission and discharge, b) confidentiality, c) client rights, d) client inventories, e) tracking sheets, and f) other forms as needed.
  • Provide trauma-informed therapeutic interventions for assigned clients.
  • Attend all mandatory trainings on time and as scheduled and check KMHS email at least once per shift.
  • Keep current on all required documentation (i.e., food handler’s permit, counselor licenses, etc.).
  • In addition to the above, any other responsibilities appropriate to the position and not specifically listed in the job description.
 
Position Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma or GED with six months relevant work experience, ability or gain licensure as an Agency Affiliated Counselor (or other applicable counselor profession) in Washington State, Food Handler card and a valid Washington State Driver License may be required prior to transporting clients. A bachelor’s degree in a counseling-related field is preferred.

Note: Gender (female or male as applicable) is a bona fide occupational qualification for the position of Mental Health Counselor (former title of position) at this time, under an opinion letter of the Executive Director of the Washington State Human Rights Commission.

PHYSICAL CONSIDERATIONS: While performing the duties of the job, the employee is required to stand, sit, use hands and fingers, reach with hands and arms, talk or listen and lift up to 50 pounds. Peripheral vision is also required for this position. A fair degree of flexibility and strength is required in this position due to the infrequent, yet essential, use of one’s body in the temporary physical restraint of some clients.
