GENERAL PURPOSE OF POSITION: To provide advocacy leadership for Global Ministries and to help UCC and Disciples members learn about and advocate on behalf of global justice issues important to local churches, the denomination, partner churches and institutions around the world, in consultation and cooperation with the Partner Relations Team.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop advocacy priorities and public policy positions on global issues important to Global Ministries and its partners around the world, in consultation with the area executives in Cleveland and Indianapolis.
  • Represent Global Ministries in ecumenical and coalitional settings on global advocacy issues, and engage in cooperative advocacy projects, as arranged in consultation with area executives and other denominational staff.
  • Create mission resources on global advocacy issues via the web, print, and other means of communication.
  • Research, write, speak, preach, etc. on advocacy issues as requested.
  • Nurture and maintain collaboration on global issues with denominational colleagues in other ministries, especially UCC Justice and Witness Ministries and DOC justice advocacy programs, particularly for such events as Ecumenical Advocacy Days, etc.
  • Collaborate with the Mission Engagement team on strategies to heighten advocacy awareness and engagement in local churches, conferences, and regions.
  • Nurture and resource advocates on global issues in UCC conferences, Disciples regions, and congregations.
  • Actively seek ways to strengthen the involvement of racial-ethnic churches and leaders in advocacy on important global issues.
  • Attend and present at international advocacy meetings as arranged in consultation with area executives.
  • Coordinate Global Ministries’ accreditation, activities, and presence at the United Nations, including any volunteer or internship engagement with the UN.
  • Manage and attend to administrative duties of position, including budget that supports program (including necessary staff travel), reports, docket material, agendas, minutes, as needed for this work, and follow through in a timely and appropriate manner on correspondence, emails, telephone calls and other matters.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Global Ministries Team Leader (Cleveland) or the Executive Minister.
 
Position Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and/or abilities required to perform successfully in this position.

  • A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in a related field of study or a combination of education and work/life experience.
  • An understanding of and commitment to the total mission of the church and to working ecumenically; knowledge of the mission program and policies of the United Church of Christ and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).
  • Knowledge of global issues related to economic, social, and environmental justice.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Basic knowledge of the U.S. Congress, State Department and the United Nations structures.
  • Ability to interact effectively and sensitively with persons from diverse backgrounds and levels of education.
  • Ability to exercise mature judgment and discretion, maintain confidences, organize own workload, set priorities, meet deadlines, and work effectively both independently and as part of various teams.
  • Ability and willingness to perform own clerical responsibilities; must be computer literate with working knowledge of email, internet, spreadsheets, word processing systems, and social networking.
  • Ability and willingness to travel domestically and, on occasion, internationally.
  • Familiarity with other church-related and secular groups working on global issues important to Global Ministries, the United Church of Christ, and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Theological training and UCC or Christian Church membership.
  • Living/working overseas experience or other interracial/international experience.
