The Access Screener/Coordinator assists the public over the phone, and in person, with requests for mental health services by providing information, referrals, screening, crisis triage, coordination of intake paperwork, data entry into the electronic medical record, and guidance with the Medicaid Apple Health application and DSHS application and enrollment process.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Work with other members of the Access Team to triage consumer requests for service via phone call to the Access Line and walk-in to the agency.
  • Provide crisis intervention as needed and facilitate immediate referral to crisis services for emergent cases. Use clinical judgment and be proficient with de-escalation skills in order to remain calm and effective when working with consumers of all ages who may be in distress or experiencing a mental health crisis.
  • Offer information and community referrals to those who do not meet eligibility criteria. Complete intake paperwork and screenings in the electronic medical record for Medicaid and Medicaid eligible consumers.  Work in conjunction with the Access team to coordinate clinician assignments and make a smooth transition through the intake process.                                                               
  • Manage flow of the Access Center including monitoring the Access Line, team phone, and triage board, keeping intake packets up-to-date and rooms maintained and stocked, working with supervisors on daily/weekly staffing status and call-outs, and completing beginning and end of shift duties.
  • Maintain a working understanding of the array of KMHS services and an up-to-date familiarity with community services, the Medicaid Apple Health eligibility and application process, the Washington Health Benefit Exchange, DSHS programs and the application for cash/food assistance, and ProviderOne in order to communicate that knowledge to the public in an effective manner, assist with benefit enrollment, and offer appropriate referrals.
  • Maintain a thorough working knowledge of the electronic medical record system, screening/coordination policies and various procedural requirements specific to the individual inpatient and outpatient programs at KMHS. Complete Access team and agency required reports, paperwork, data entry, and database management in an appropriate, clear, accurate and timely fashion.
  • Process all referrals from primary care physicians to KMHS to include entry into the electronic medical record and monitoring outcomes and compliance across the agency. Utilize various reports to monitor compliance and ensure data integrity in the electronic medical record system, as assigned.
  • Routinely communicate and problem solve with agency departments to ensure that referrals for services are appropriate and received and completed in a timely fashion. Participate in staff meetings and contribute towards maintaining a positive, solution-oriented approach to problem solving and a supportive team environment.
  • Ensure quality service to the public by communicating in a sensitive, respectful and knowledgeable manner. Contribute toward the development and maintaince of positive and collaborative relationships with KMHS programs, other public or private agencies, and with the public at large, in order to further enhance the overall mission and goals of the agency.

Position Requirements

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and ability to articulate complex service systems for a general audience and quickly establish positive rapport.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently, or with a team, and manage multiple tasks, in a fast-paced environment.



  • Ability to effectively assist a diverse population of individuals and families across the lifespan with Severe and Persistent Mental Illness or Serious Emotional Disturbance, and who may be in crisis.   
  • Proficient with computers and able to concurrently enter data into an electronic medical record with speed and accuracy while speaking with consumers face-to-face or over the telephone.


Physical Abilities:

While performing the duties of the job, the employee is required to use hands and fingers and to stand and/or sit and use a computer and telephone for extended periods of time.  


Education and Experience:

Bachelors Degree in psychology, human services, or related field is required.  Experience working with mental health consumers in a clinically oriented setting is preferred.


Licenses and Certificates:

Must be able to secure a Counselor Agency Affiliated Registration through the Washington State Department of Health.
