SUMMARY

Under the direction and guidance of the Senior Grants/Major Gifts Officer the Grant Proposal Writer develops resources, researches funding sources, and writes proposals to a variety of donors, celebrities, foundations and corporations. The Grant Proposal Writer is responsible for writing proposals for unrestricted operating revenue and restricted projects as well as submitting timely and accurate reports. This position also may provide support to the development staff in the production of fundraising materials. The Grant Proposal Write, in association with the Director of Fundraising, will collaborate with other members of the development team to create fundraising project summaries, funding proposals, stewardship reports, and other written materials for internal and external audiences. This position will serve as project manager, editor, and/or principal writer for a wide variety of print and electronic projects, including funding proposals for individuals, corporations, foundations, capital campaign-related promotional materials; annual stewardship reports for select foundation donors; and project summaries for a diverse array of fundraising goals. Types of projects include formal proposals, letters of inquiry, brochures and flyers, direct mail pieces, invitations, etc.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Responsible for conducting the full range of activities required to prepare, submit, and manage grant proposals to foundation and corporate sources.
  2. Perform prospect research on foundations and corporations to evaluate prospects for corporate and foundation grants.
  3. Assist finance to gather information necessary to report to corporate/foundation funders on current grant programs.
  4. Comply with all grants reporting as required by foundation/corporate donors.
  5. Provide stewardship to current donors; provide regular written updates (newsletters, coffee table books, reports etc.) to corporate and foundation donors.
  6. Understanding of institutional history and programs.
  7. Schedule appointments for DF and Grants Officer with foundation officers and other prospects, arrange for onsite tours for supporters (foundation officers, foundation trustees).
  8. Maintain current records in database and in paper files, including grant tracking and reporting.
  9. Assist in tracking statistics relevant to development and provide department with written materials necessary for donor stewardship.
  10. Provide development input for all written institutional materials (including annual report, and event collaterals).
  11. Manages Capital Campaign writing projects, as assigned, from inception through delivery.
  12. Writes and edits additional Development-oriented copy as assigned.
  13. Periodically provides updated content for Development sections of OV web site.
  14. Represents Development office on committees.
  15. Performs other duties as assigned.
 
Position Requirements

SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Ability to communicate effectively with individuals, co-workers and supervisors (verbal and written).
  • Must possess social perceptiveness to assess and understand other’s reactions and behaviors.
  • Strong written communication skills; ability to write clear, structured, articulate, and persuasive proposals.
  • Strong editing skills.
  • Attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Knowledge of fundraising information sources.
  • Experience with proposal writing and institutional donors.
  • Knowledge of basic fundraising techniques and strategies.
  • Knowledge and familiarity with research techniques for fundraising prospect research.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of business correspondence, marketing materials and reports.
  • Strong writing, editing and proofreading skills. Ability to easily change writing styles to fit the audience and voice of the piece.
  • Strong project management and communication skills.
  • Ability to quickly and effectively gather information by means of interviews and database research.
  • Ability to work both collaboratively and independently.
  • Ability to organize information for effective presentation in publications, web sites, and other media.
  • Ability to interact effectively with a wide variety of people.
  • Ability to produce high-quality work on deadlines.
  • Commitment to the highest standards of customer service and professionalism.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment and multitask.
  • Ability to monitor and meet income goals.
  • Knowledge of standard concepts, practices and procedures related to the position, (i.e. expertise in language skills and grammar.
  • Ability to conduct extensive research, understanding of branding and positioning strategies for special projects.
  • Ability to learn subject specific terminology for use in developing written materials with knowledge of when and how to use various channels of communication.
  • Computer literate (i.e. Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point).

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Required: Bachelor’s degree in communications, research or another relevant field.
  • Required: Two years’ of successful and proven grant writing ecperience. .
  • Preferred: Previous work experience in non-profit fundraising.
