Position Summary:

Functions as a Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant, independently formulating diagnosis, prescribing medication, and providing therapy while assuming responsibility and accountability for a group of patients. The Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant must demonstrate excellent customer service and have enthusiasm about the program and the Pine Rest organization.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Gives and directs psychiatric care to an individual or group of patients, teaches patient/family and as an independent practitioner.
  • Works in various clinical settings with diverse patient populations.
  • Provides a safe and secure environment for patients and staff in both individual and group settings.
  • Documents all necessary information according to established procedures.
  • Creates a customer/client friendly environment by following quality improvement standards and maintaining professionalism and seeking development.
  • Promotes careful use of resources.
  • Functions as a consultant
  • May be responsible to promote positive collaborative working relationships with Physician’s and other staff.
  • Prescribes medication according to established protocols with a physician.
  • Conducts individual/family/group psychotherapy.
  • May initiate relevant clinical studies, working to translate research findings into routine clinical practice.
  • May monitor the effectiveness of interventions.
  • May be required to meet the minimum established quality and productivity metrics.
  • May be required to support and promote a recovery focused environment and person-centered approach within the program.
  • Must maintain annual training and demonstrate competency in the required programmatic training.
  • Performs other duties or functions as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • May supervise other staff.
 
Position Requirements

Required/Desired Qualifications:

Education, Training, and Experience of a Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant:

  • Licensed to practice as a Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant in the state of Iowa.
  • Experience working within Psychiatric Practice is highly desired.

Education, Training, and Experience of a Physician Assistant:

  • Certificate of completion from an approved program for physician assistants required. Must be licensed by the State of Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs. Task force on Physician’s Assistants and certified by the NCCPA.
  • Psychiatric fellowship preferred.
  • The successful Physician Assistant candidate will work under the responsibility and supervision of the physician and require completion of an ARC-PA (or predecessor organization) approved physician assistant program, current NCCPA certification and Michigan licensure.

  • Ability to provide cultural competent care with a wide range of individuals in a diverse community setting.
  • Requires physical and emotional stamina to deal with physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs of patients.
  • Competent to provide age specific care to a variety of patient populations and settings.
  • The candidate may be required to have a valid Michigan driver’s license and ability access to access Pine Rest Transportation Vehicles for the performance of job duties.
 
About the Organization Pine Rest is a nonprofit, free standing, behavioral health system founded in 1910 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. This comprehensive behavioral health center, coupled with the Pine Rest network of 19 outpatient clinics and satellite offices in Michigan and Iowa, provide individualized and group therapy for people of all ages and all levels of need. Pine Rest clinicians offer therapeutic services in behavioral health for people of all ages and all levels of need across the continuum of care within a Christian framework.

Pine Rest has a 200-bed inpatient hospital program with a 36-bed child and adolescent inpatient and a large partial hospital program for adolescents. Additionally, Pine Rest has many inpatient services for adults, including: a 28-bed psychiatric-medical unit in an acute care hospital, four 22-bed adult inpatient units each designed for a different level of acuity, a 22-bed co-occurring substance use disorder adult inpatient unit, a large adult partial hospital program, and a 26-bed older adult inpatient unit.

The Pine Rest Community and Residential Services Division also provides a wide array of services. With over 220 residential beds across a variety of programs, including treatment for substance use disorders, homes for adults with intellectual and developmental disorders, adults with mental illness, and a program for youth aged 11-18 with extensive trauma histories focusing on trauma treatment and life skills programming.

Other campus based services include a forensic psychiatry clinic, a psychological consultation testing center, an attention deficit disorders clinic, an autism spectrum disorders clinic, and a large neuromodulation clinic which provides TMS and ECT services.

The medical staff includes over 70 psychiatrists and other MDs/DOs, more than 120 fully licensed psychologists, more than 250 licensed masters-level social workers, and 30 PAs/NPs.
