Architectural Historian

Redhorse Corporation has an immediate need for an Architectural Historian to work on a project team at Edwards AFB, CA.

The Architectural Historian will work on-site at the customer's facility at Edwards AFB, CA to provide professional architectural history management, compliance, and consultation services to include pre-field tasks through final report preparation. Primary duties will focus on performing services in support of cultural resource management (CRM).

The Architectural Historian will communicate directly with the client and plan and carry out architectural inventory surveys and project-level review for compliance with the Secretary of the Interior's Standards.

The project tasks may include, but are not limited to, historic, architectural contextual studies, installation or structure histories, historic building inventory, evaluation, and documentation; preparing preservation and/or stabilization plans for historic buildings; preparing National Register of Historic Places nomination packages; preparing Historic American Building Survey/Historic American Engineering Records; supporting preparation and at least annual updating of ICRMP; curation and assessment support; and maintenance of utilization of GIS and GPS.

Position Requirements

Minimum requirements:

  • MA or MS in architectural history, historic preservation, history, or related discipline and be qualified per Secretary of Interior’s Professional Standards and Guidelines as outlined in the Code of Federal Regulations - 36 CFR Part 61
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience as a professional architectural historian conducting archival research and familiarity with archives in the Great Basin
  • Experience completing new and updating existing historic documentation
  • Must have strong leadership, communication, and project management skills
  • Has provided QA/QC review of field documents and historic context reports
  • Has completed all aspects of a project, from pre-field tasks to final report preparation
  • Must have experience working with the Department of Defense (DoD).
  • The successful candidate shall possess a working knowledge of National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), SOI Standards, HABS/HAER documentation; other applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations; and related DoD and AF directives (including DoDI 4715.16; DoDI 4710.02; and AFI 32-7065).
  • Candidate shall have demonstrated ability to carry research to completion, for example, by planning the authoring of historic context reports and NRHP nominations.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to independently resolve issues and work creatively to increase efficiency.

  • Well-developed verbal and technical report writing skills.
  • Working knowledge of standard office computer software (e.g. Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access, etc.).
  • Experience working in the Mojave Desert or Great Basin and the ability to work long days in a wide range of weather conditions.
  • Knowledge and experience with mapping software (ArcGIS).
  • Experience navigating and collecting data using GPS technology.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain a standard California Driver’s License, be able to work in extreme climatic conditions, be able to walk long distances, work with minimal supervision, use GPS technology, read maps, and be skilled in North American Compliance Archaeological techniques and practices.
  • Upon hiring the applicant must be able to pass a federal background check required prior to gaining access to unclassified government computer work stations.
