The Academy Film Archive produces and is involved in the production of hundreds of unique moving image elements every year for departments throughout the Academy, including Membership and Awards, Communications, Marketing, Programming (in Los Angeles, New York, and London), the Science and Technology Council, the Museum, and the Margaret Herrick Library.

The Content Services Coordinator's primary duties involve providing access to and conserving this archival content, with emphasis on internal requests and deliverables for time-sensitive projects. The Coordinator works with the Public Access Manager to research and deliver elements to department contacts and outside producers in a timely, sensitive, and organized manner.

Primary duties and responsibilities include:

  • Cataloging and archiving moving image content produced for Foundation programs and within the Archive, including (but not limited to): Academy programs, presentations and clip programs curated by Archive staff, incoming content from licensing requests, montages produced internally for outward-facing mediums. Working closely with the Digital Management Services department to ensure that elements are delivered in a timely manner.
  • Working closely with Programming and Membership and Awards departments to select and deliver clips for Foundation programs.
  • Conducting database research for internal and external requests, including loan requests and research appointments as needed.
  • Capturing video content from legacy formats (including but not limited to DigiBeta, BetaSP, mini-DV, Hi-8) for inclusion in archival packages in Foundation Programs, online access, and in Public Access. Working closely with Archive Video Producer to deliver raw files for montages.
  • Assisting with licensing requests; conducting preliminary research and assisting the Public Access Manager in fulfilling requests from licensees for non-Oscar moving image material.
  • Inspecting and repairing small gauge film materials for transferring 8mm, Super-8, and 16mm small gauge film on Archive scanning equipment.
  • Writing collection profiles and securing visual components for the website, including scanning frame enlargements, capturing video elements, and delivering them to the Information Technology department.

During Oscar season (approximately from September to March), the following project duties and responsibilities take priority:

  • Selecting and delivering clips for the Oscars and Oscar Week activities, working closely with the Programming, Membership and Awards, Communications, and Marketing departments.
  • Providing Oscars-related content to Producers and licensees, working with the Public Access Manager.
  • Compiling and delivering content during nominations process, working closely with the Membership and Awards department.

Position Requirements
  • Extensive knowledge of film history and technology.
  • Experience in the operation of film handling and video viewing equipment.
  • Skill in using standard computer word processing and database software.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Experience with digital image files and computer editing software.
  • Experience in handling film, specifically small gauge film, as well as knowledge of film viewing equipment.
  • Experience in the operation of current and legacy video formats and related viewing and editing equipment.
  • Proficiency with video editing software, including adding titles, watermarks, and transitions to packages. Experience with Adobe Creative Suite preferred.
  • Understanding of video formats, frame rates, file codecs, transcoding, and video compression.
  • Degree in archival film studies or equivalent preferred.
  • Ability to lift at least 35 lbs.
