GENERAL PURPOSE OF POSTION:

The Justice & Witness Ministries of The United Church of Christ is seeking an independent, innovative candidate with a working knowledge of economic justice and the ways economic inequity manifest in individual, communal and congregational life.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop a comprehensive and strategic approach and curriculum for economic justice that includes a short-term and long-range economic justice plan that engages all settings of the UCC to eradicate economic inequity in church and society.
  • Work with staff colleagues in the national setting to explore and understand the intersection of economic justice with other justice issues, and to connect with Global Mission partners regarding matters of economic justice in other parts of the world.
  • Create, curate, and work with conferences, associations, and congregations to implement strategies and programs related to labor relations and the economic inequity.
  • Develop and implement a strategy for the involvement of the United Church of Christ in issues of worker justice, with particular attention to coalition building with worker-led and worker-supporting organizations on issues of common concern.
  • Represent JWM and the national setting of the UCC in all settings of the UCC, ecumenically, and in interfaith settings as appropriately related to this portfolio.
  • Provide leadership within JWM, General Synod, and other settings of the church as appropriate in developing public policy positions and making policy statements on issues of economic justice.
  • Develop and nurture ecumenical and interfaith partnerships around economic justice.
  • Serve as lead JWM coordinator for Synod resolutions where issues of economic inequity are present.
  • Continue to build the UCC Economic Justice Movement to engage UCC members in the work of economic justice through regular contact and action opportunities
  • Demonstrate a theological understanding of economic justice in both the verbal and written articulation of our mission and vision.
 
Position Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and/or abilities required to perform successfully in this position.

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field required, graduate degree highly preferred.
  • Substantial experience in the fields of theology and ethics.
  • Professional work experience in and knowledge about a wide range of economic justice issues including worker justice, poverty, job creation and unemployment, globalization and trade, taxes, the causes and consequences of economic inequality, and the federal budget.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of the United Church of Christ, its history and polity especially its commitment to prophetic ministry in the church and society.
  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills, including some forms of published thought.
  • Demonstrated skills in social and cultural analysis, particularly in the areas of economic inequity.
  • Ability to work in a diverse setting and develop and maintain healthy relationships with persons representing a wide variety of racial, ethnic, and class realities and perspectives.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collegially and collaboratively.
  • Ability and willingness to travel as necessary.
  • Multilingual highly preferred
