The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures is presently seeking a Director, Marketing and Communications to serve as an integral part of the Academy Museum team. This position is a visible and prominent role at the Museum and is responsible for leading and directing the development and execution of marketing and communications strategies. The Director will recommend, assess, and oversee marketing and communications strategies and their impact on organization and creative objectives working. The Director will supervise the Museum’s Marketing and Communications teams, in partnership with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

The ideal candidate will be a creative visionary with an entrepreneurial spark, driving progressive marketing and communications campaigns while inspiring innovation across the team.

Reports to: Managing Director, Advancement and External Relations

Responsibilities:

  • Direct the development and creative process for multi-platform marketing and communications programs and tools, utilizing both internal and external resources.
  • Lead and implement each project to ensure the appropriate level of marketing, publicity, web presence, and social media is defined and activated.
  • Provide strategic planning and implementation of marketing and communications programs and projects that support organizational marketing objectives.
  • Analyze data and adjust strategies in response to industry trends.
  • Continuously refine and pursue strategic ways to innovate and advance the Museum’s brand.
  • Produce print and digital content to promote the Museum and maximize its reach.
  • Ensure cohesion and consistency in the presentation of the Museum’s brand.
  • Oversee the marketing and communications budget and determine necessary expenses to create a release plan that will effectively drive awareness and visibility of the Museum before, during and after its opening.
  • Ensure a cohesive communications approach to the Museum’s mission, exhibitions, and public programs.
  • Oversee the development of publicity strategies for the exhibitions, public programs, and special events.
  • Organize press previews.
  • Oversee the development of the Museum website with other Museum and Academy stakeholders as appropriate.
  • Other duties as assigned.
 
Position Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Business, Film, or related field of study.
  • 10+ years relevant marketing experience with proven leadership skills.
  • Experience developing and implementing successful and effective marketing and communications plans with limited budgets.
  • Demonstrated success developing messaging framework and evaluating communications effectiveness.
  • Ability to maximize coverage for the Museum in an innovative way.
  • Strong working knowledge of media relations and communications practices.
  • Knowledge of direct mail, telemarketing, social media, video, and web design.
  • Excellent negotiation, communications, and proofreading skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects and operate effectively in a high pressure environment.

Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Renzo Piano, the Academy Museum will restore and revitalize the historic May Company building at the corner of Wilshire Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue. The Academy Museum will feature six floors of exhibition spaces, theaters, education areas, special event spaces, conservation areas, a restaurant, café and store. A new spherical addition will connect to the May Company building with glass bridges and will feature a state-of-the-art 1,000-seat theater and a rooftop terrace.
