About the Organization KMHS is Kitsap's nonprofit, designated community mental health provider for adults with acute and/or chronic serious mental illnesses, and children with serious emotional disturbances and their families. During 2016, KMHS provided services to more than 6,800 children and adults.

SHIFT: Tuesday through Saturday 8:30am-5:00pm

Function as a member of a multidisciplinary team responsible for carrying out rehabilitation and support functions and assisting in treatment for individuals diagnosed with severe and persistent mental illness. To provide substance abuse services, education, consultation to families, and crisis intervention services to clients assigned to the team, with a minimum of 75% of all services delivered in the community via assertive outreach. To provide individual vocational-supportive counseling to enable clients to identify vocational strengths and barriers, establish vocational or career goals and plans to reach them, and recognize target symptoms of mental illness that interfere with work.


  • Provide treatment coordination services for an assigned group of clients, including coordinating and monitoring the activities of the individual treatment team (ITT).
  • Assume primary responsibility for collaboratively developing, writing, implementing, evaluating, and revising overall treatment goals and plans in collaboration with the client and the ITT. Use recovery-based concepts and language in both written and verbal communications.
  • Provide individual therapy and symptom management. Utilize Cognitive Behavioral approach, Motivational Interviewing, stages of change theory, Trauma Informed Care approaches, and stage-wise treatment strategies to intervene and motivate clients for change.
  • Educate and support clients' families and advocate for clients' rights and preferences. Consult with families and community agencies such as DSHS, court systems, housing authorities, etc., to maintain coordination in the treatment process.
  • Participate in comprehensive assessment of psychiatric history on each assigned client.
  • Document client progress to maintain a permanent record of client activity according to established policies and procedures.
  • Participate in daily staff organizational meetings and treatment planning review meetings.
  • Participate in providing information to clients on substance use issues such as the effect on mental and physical health and daily functioning. Participate in planning to reduce use or abstain from the use of substances, and help teach replacement behaviors.
  • Provide vocational-supportive counseling designed to help clients achieve vocational or career goals. Provide ongoing support for job retention, while managing symptoms.
  • Plan and provide work-related supportive services such as symptom management, assistance with grooming and personal hygiene, securing appropriate clothing, wake-up calls and transportation.
  • Teach job-seeking skills including resume writing, job searches, and interviewing skills.

Position Requirements

Bachelor's degree in psychology, social services or a related field required; licensure as WA State Agency Affiliated Counselor or Social Worker; must possess and maintain valid driver's license with an acceptable motor vehicle report, and reliable personal transportation with business-rated insurance. Experience working with clients with chronic mental illness in a community mental health setting preferred.
