Description SUMMARY
The California Emerging Infections Program (CEIP) is a program administered by Public Health Foundation Enterprises, Inc (PHFE) which is a non-profit public health research organization. CEIP functions under a cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and is a collaborative effort involving the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), the University of California, Berkeley, School of Public Health, and several local health departments.

The successful candidate will assist with a variety of research activities including assisting project coordinator(s) or surveillance officers in data collection and data entry, contacting hospitals and laboratories for information regarding cases, interacting with hospital medical records departments and physicians' offices to obtain case information, general organizational office tasks, and conducting standardized telephone interviews of case patients or controls using standardized forms. Study protocol will require Interviews to be conducted in the evenings or on the weekend. These may be conducted from home.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
• Assisting project coordinators or surveillance officers in data collection and data entry.
• Interacting with hospital medical records departments and physicians' offices to obtain case information.
• General office duties such as answering telephones, photocopying, filing, and assisting in mailings
• Follow standardized questionnaires and record/code answers.
• Finalizing paperwork and submitting for review.
• Willingness to work some evening and weekend hours
 
Position Requirements JOB QUALIFICATIONS
The research assistant working on this project must have a keen interest in infectious disease epidemiology, excellent communication skills, and strong attention to detail

Education/Experience
Educational Requirement: College degree in related area such as Biology, Health Science, Public Health or Microbiology.

• Experience using a PC.
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office (especially Word, Excel and Access).
• Ability to enter data accurately with minimal supervision.
• Meticulous attention to detail.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills.
• Capacity to work independently or in a team environment.
• Knowledge of SAS is a plus but not required.

Certificates/Licenses/Clearances
Must possess a valid California Driver's License and access to vehicle

Other Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
• Experience working with protected health information and maintaining patient confidentiality preferred.
• Experience interviewing patients with structured questionnaires for research purposes preferred.
• Some microbiology coursework very helpful but not required.
