Job Summary:

This position will focus on supporting the Baseball Operations department by analyzing baseball data sets using advanced statistical analysis. The primary tasks include creating, implementing, and maintaining predictive models and clearly communicating their results and meaning to inform the decision making process. The position will report to the Director, Baseball Informatics and act as a resource to other staff on the proper use and implementation of statistical techniques and their suitability for baseball analysis.

Responsibilities:

  • Utilize, design, test, implement, and maintain advanced baseball metrics and predictive models using statistical tools and analysis.
  • Communicate with the Baseball Operations leadership on player evaluation, valuation, acquisition, in-game strategy, player development, and transactions by presenting the results of analyses and their implications in a clear, understandable fashion using a variety of avenues.
  • Advise other staff on the proper use and implementation of statistical techniques, algorithms, and tools.
  • Keep abreast of developments in statistical fields related to techniques, algorithms, and tools applicable to baseball research and recommend/implement them where applicable.
  • Keep abreast of sabermetric research in order to integrate new models and processes into the existing infrastructure.
  • Other duties as assigned by Director, Baseball Informatics.
  • Maintain and extend the current information infrastructure through the use of SQL, SQL Reporting Services, R, and C#.
  • Work with the Director, Baseball Informatics and Data Architect to maintain the long term information and systems architecture for Baseball Operations.
 
Position Requirements

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in statistics, engineering, applied math, physics, quantitative social sciences, computer science, operations research or similar field.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with relational database systems and some knowledge of SQL. Proficiency in one or more programming languages such as Python, R, or C#.
  • Demonstrated ability to present complex models and ideas to decision makers using oral, written, and presentation skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to present ideas using data visualization.
  • Masters degree in Statistics, Operations Research, Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related quantitative field.
  • Experience in the baseball industry.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and teach other staff members.
  • Experience with machine learning techniques.
