The Sr. R&D Product Development Manager is responsible for leading the execution of product development in the Home Care R&D group, working under the direction of the VP of R&D. This involves a combination of strong creative problem solving skills, an understanding of consumer drivers in our product categories, team management and the passion to bring truly differentiated, efficacious and natural home care products to market.


  • Lead a Formulation Team in the development of home care products (Laundry, Dish, Cleaners) that meet our performance and authenticity standards globally.
  • Manage projects independently, working well cross-functionally with Marketing, Supply Chain, other R&D groups, outside suppliers and our parent company - Unilever.
  • Lead development of product design, optimization of formulations for specific attributes, manage costs, and ensure authenticity of raw materials.
  • Lead/Collaborate in product qualification including product stability testing, micro-challenge, and performance testing, fragrance brief, and others
  • Support scale up by generating data that provides a holistic picture of potential formula manufacturing behavior.
  • Supervision, collaboration, and mentoring of chemists and interns.
  • Support product launch with visit to outside manufacturer partners, market and consumer insight events as requested.
  • Function as a key resource in responses to internal/consumer technical questions and drive launch education.
  • Participation in cross functional teams for new product development and launches.
  • Participate in market analyses to identify products’ innovative points of differentiation for formulation, claims and/or performance.
  • Review trade publications and other industry sources for raw material information, regulatory updates and educational opportunities.
  • Identify, review and assess pertinent technologies from external and internal sources as well as patents and Intellectual properties
  • Review patent landscape as part of product development process to ensure products do not infringe on protected technologies.
  • Involve interested parties inside and outside of R&D in the development of new products through written and oral communication to ensure internal alignment and the best possible products.
  • Perform other tasks as may be required by Research & Development in the fulfillment of its objectives.
Position Requirements
  • BS in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or related discipline, advanced degrees an advantage
  • 10+ years consumer product packaged good experience - preferably in home care.
  • 5+ years’ experience managing Direct reports.
  • Experience reviewing and assessing new technologies, regulations and patents.
  • Experience in material and formula safety/toxicology assessment a plus
  • Strong project management skills
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office and database systems
  • Strong organizational, verbal, and written skills with intense attention to detail.
  • Able to prioritize and meet deadlines within specified time constraints.
  • Self-motivated with an enhanced ability to work independently.
