Description

The Director of Individual Giving for the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures is an outstanding opportunity for a seasoned fundraiser to manage a robust Individual Giving program supporting both the campaign to build the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures as well as its ongoing operations. The successful candidate will be a metrics-driven major gift fundraiser, experienced working with volunteer leaders and high level prospects, able to manage and mentor colleague gift officers, and a professional who thrives in a fast-paced culture.

Reporting to the Managing Director of Advancement and External Relations, the Director of Individual Giving will strategically oversee and proactively expand a program that includes Principle Gifts, Major Gifts, an aggressive direct marketing campaign, Planned Giving, Annual Fund and a museum Membership program. The Director of Individual Giving will also manage “mini campaigns” within the campaign as well as an organic portfolio of prospects.

Position Elements

  • Creates, oversees and monitors strategies to achieve Individual Giving goals as part of the Academy Museum’s Capital Campaign
  • Works closely with Academy professional and volunteer leadership, deploying them as necessary to cultivate and solicit gifts
  • Manages mini-campaigns within the larger campaign including working with committees and developing necessary solicitation material
  • Manages and refines systems to track performance metrics and increase pipeline development, including strategic use of research
  • Manages prospect activity for his/her portfolio as well as tracking progress of Major Gift Officers
  • Initiates contacts with potential leadership and major gift donors
  • Develops appropriate cultivation strategies
  • Moves potential donors in an appropriate and timely fashion toward solicitation, gift closure and stewardship
  • Makes solicitations when appropriate
  • Maintains stewardship contacts with donors
  • Working with the Manager of Annual Fund and Membership and a Direct Marketing consultant, overseeing the Museum’s direct mail program
  • Supervises the creation and implementation of a new Museum membership program
  • Supervises the creation and implementation of a new Planned Giving program
  • Monitors all prospect contacts to ensure positive and purposeful prospect and donor relations and stewardship
 
Position Requirements

  • 7 – 10 years successful progressive experience in fundraising from individuals, preferably in the arts
  • Proven success in raising multiple six to seven figure gifts
  • Broad knowledge of the principles of fundraising
  • Knowledge of Planned Giving Vehicles
  • Successful experience in making cold calls as well as developing cultivation and solicitation strategies
  • Successful experience supervising staff including knowledge of metrics-based moves management
  • Film background and knowledge of the moviemaking community a plus
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal skills
  • Strong problem solving, research and analytical skills
  • Strong organizational and strategic planning skills
  • Knowledge of Altu a plus
  • Flexibility to work some evenings and weekends

Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Renzo Piano, the Academy Museum will restore and revitalize the historic Wilshire May Company building at the corner of Wilshire Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue. The Academy Museum will feature six floors of exhibition spaces, theaters, education areas, special event spaces, conservation areas, and a café and store. A new spherical addition will connect to the May Company building with glass bridges and will feature a state-of-the-art 1,000-seat theater and a rooftop terrace.The Academy is currently raising $388 million to support the building, exhibitions, and programs of the Academy Museum. The campaign was launched in 2012, headed by chair Bob Iger and co-chairs Annette Bening and Tom Hanks.
