Description

Maintenance Technician I

Definition and Purpose

Under the direct supervision of the Assistant Director – University Union or the Coordinator – Facility Operations (Recreational Sports), the Maintenance Technician I is responsible for the skilled repair, maintenance, assembly and installation of a variety of equipment and periodic maintenance projects at ASI facilities. Primary assignments may include general building maintenance or equipment maintenance.

Additionally, all ASI employees are responsible for upholding the core values of the organization including but not limited to exhibiting professional behavior, acting as a role model to others, displaying a positive and cooperative attitude, communicating effectively, developing expert knowledge in area of specialization, and working together as a team.

Education Requirements and Qualifying Experiences

Educational/License/Credential Requirements

  • High school diploma, GED or equivalent.
  • Must hold a CA Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record.

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum two (2) years experience, four (4) years preferred maintaining and repairing technical equipment, preferably in a large facility, that demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions of the job.

Knowledge/Skill Requirements

  • Ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position.
  • General knowledge of office methods, equipment, procedures, and practices.
  • Knowledge of Windows-based computer systems.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and written.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with others on diverse teams.
  • Ability to troubleshoot equipment problems and take appropriate action to restore service.
  • General mechanical aptitude and ability to perform a variety of skilled maintenance and repair tasks.
  • Ability to follow simple oral and written directions.
  • Ability to make mathematical computations where required.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Assist Assistant Director – University Union or Coordinator – Facility Operations (Recreational Sports) in instructing, scheduling, and assigning work to student assistants.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

General Building Maintenance Responsibilities

  • Assist in preventive and corrective maintenance including general plumbing, electrical, carpentry, mechanical, and furnishings in ASI Facilities as directed by the Assistant Director – University Union or Coordinator – Facility Operations (Recreational Sports).
  • Assist with carpentry maintenance such as refinishing, building and repairing furniture, doors, paneling, bulletin boards, etc.
  • Assist in the maintenance of plumbing systems.
  • Repair, clean, and maintain faucets, sinks drains, and traps to ensure working order on a daily basis.
  • Paint interior and exterior areas as directed.
  • Maintain floor and wall tiles, door closures, air lift, wall patching, etc.
  • Assist in the maintenance of HVAC systems including repairing and making adjustments to the heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems.
  • Assist with general building maintenance of architectural hardware and finishes.
  • Maintain appropriate certifications, and safely handle hazardous materials including asbestos and lead as necessary.
  • Interpret and implement emergency and accident procedures.
  • Assist with shipping and receiving.
  • Communicate and follow-up with University Facilities Services for ongoing maintenance and custodial needs.
  • Serve as back-up to Maintenance Technician I – Pool Maintenance as needed.
  • Follow up with vendors on orders for building repairs, or specific parts.

Building Set-up

  • Assist in the coordination and set-up of ASI Events.

Equipment Maintenance

  • Ensure all equipment is in safe and proper operating conditions.
  • Accomplish daily, weekly, and quarterly preventative maintenance of equipment.
  • Check daily maintenance reports, ensuring that deficiencies are addressed promptly.
  • Follow personal safety procedures for maintaining equipment.
  • Clean, adjust, lubricate, replace worn or defective parts, overhaul, assemble, and install electrical, electro-mechanical and mechanical devices and equipment.
  • Repair and maintain highly specialized Recreational Sports equipment.
  • Develop an inventory of supplies, replacement parts, and tools required for equipment maintenance, including follow up with vendors on orders to ensure timely receipt of necessary items.
  • Research, recommend, and assemble equipment.
  • Collaborate with contractors on facility and equipment repairs.
  • Keep records of maintenance actions, procedures, and frequencies.

Assessment

  • Develop and execute assessment of programs and/or services for areas of responsibility including but not limited to setting and implementing goals, evaluating outcomes and ongoing enhancement.
  • Participate in the overall ASI assessment planning and goal setting.

NOTE: Some primary assignments for Maintenance Technician I is fluid and are periodically reviewed and revised based on program philosophy, professional development, and staff needs.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

  • Represent ASI on committees as appropriate.
  • Ensure continuous professional development.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Salary Schedule

Hourly Rate: $21.54

Background Check

This position is subject to a background check (including criminal records) as well as National Address Locater (Social Security Number [SSN] Trace), 7 year County Criminal Search in each county and/or state the applicant lived in based on the SSN Trace, National Criminal Database Search, Name Search, Employment Verification (All employers in past 7 years) and Education Verification (Highest Degree). Credit Reports, Motor Vehicle Record Check and Professional License Verification may also be required based upon the essential functions of the position.

Position Requirements
