POSITION SUMMARY

The Senior Cataloging Librarian will be responsible for ensuring the quality control of a cataloging system for a federal library. The Senior Cataloging Librarian will need to be well-versed in cataloging, bibliographic, and metadata best practices and will work closely with library staff to create, correct, manage, and maintain the item records and holdings in the library’s collection and library system.

General Description of Duties:

  1. Provide support for cataloging, serials processing, catalog maintenance, and physical processing for multiple formats and locations
  2. Provide support for the creation, documentation, training, and on-going improvement of cataloging/bibliographic workflows through collaboration with library staff.
  3. Provide support for enhancing access to print and digital materials
  4. Responsible for timely original and complex copy cataloging for library materials in all formats, including print and electronic monographs and serials, as well as other digital items, while adhering to Name Authority Cooperative Program (NACO) standards
  5. Identify cataloging and collection risks, and suggest mitigation actions
  6. Stay current with cataloging and metadata developments and provide expert advice to the library on providing access to information resources
  7. Stay abreast of the federal library’s system updates and enhancements
  8. Follow the federal library rules, regulations, and procedures

Position Requirements

Education: Master's degree in Library Science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited school.

Required Experience: A minimum of five years' experience in libraries, library management and discovery systems as well as a minimum of two years original cataloging experience applying current standards and systems to include:

  • Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules (AACR2)
  • Machine Readable Cataloging (MARC21)
  • Resource Description and Access (RDA)
  • Library of Congress Classification (LCC)
  • Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH)
  • Library of Congress Program for Cooperative Cataloging (LC/PCC) and
  • OCLC Connexion.

This position also requires experience in cataloging, and providing metadata for, digital formats. Â experience in cataloging in MARC and experience in creating and editing non-MARC metadata using standards and schema e.g.

  • Dublin Core
  • Metadata Object Description Schema (MODS), etc., in addition to experience cataloging in MARC.

Preferred Experience:

  • Working as a federal contractor
  • Working in federal library
  • Working in a research library
  • Wide range of:
    • preservation principles and practices
    • library physical environments
    • programs and procedures
  • Working with ExLibris library systems e.g. Aleph, Alma, and/or Voyager

CITIZENSHIP REQUIREMENTS

US Citizenship is a requirement for this position. Candidate may be subject to a security investigation and may need to meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Security clearances are a plus.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, hear, and use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.
