Business Unit Manufacturing Director 


Gulian & Associates, LLC, a full service talent management firm, has been retained to fill a  Business Unit Manufacturing Project Director for our client located in King of Prussia, PA. 

The Role

The Business Unit Manufacturing Project Director will report directly to the Global President and will take direction from the project(s) steering committee.  At any time, project(s) may be comprised of 30-60 employees and/or contractors.


This position will be the BU lead for all capital project investments (US & Global) and will contain a significant safety component as well as product logistics dimension.  The Project Director is responsible for optimizing logistics and storage of Organic Peroxides products.


This position will be based in King of Prussia, PA and will have an anticipated travel schedule of approx. 50% including both domestic as well as some international travel.




  • Responsible for the project strategy – structure, resources, positioning/outsourcing and risk management - and its alignment with the Business strategy
  • Responsible and accountable for meeting the Project Plan successfully – in particular the Project cost and overall timeframe
  • Accountable on the business plan and associated manufacturing economics
  • Manages the relationship with key partners from a Project Management standpoint
  • Involved in getting the various authorizations related to the Project implementation
  • Guides the project team and ensures adequate resources for the project
  • Focal point for all formal communications to management, team members and other stakeholders in the project – in particular promptly alerts the upper management levels and relevant stakeholders in case of deviation vs plan
  • Ensures that the decision files are ready for the Gate Meetings
  • Sets up the Owner’s project scope agreement with the support of the Engineering Project Director
  • Validates the Project Execution Plan proposed by the Engineering Project Director
  • In charge of leading the Internal Steering Committee meeting
  • In coordination with the Central Process Group, supervise the preparation of the Process Book:
  • Participation in reviewing the process design, PFDs, P & IDs, PHA, etc.  and design work completed by the Engineering Company
  • Verify the conformity of Project deliverables with rules and applicable standards on the site
  • Coordinate with the corporate HES group and plant to prepare the regulatory, technical and administrative filings for submission to the relevant authorities to obtain permits and licenses
  • Monitor and control costs, schedules, productivity, trends, and scope changes throughout the life of the project



The selected candidate for this role will be someone with a proven project management background and a strong business acumen who will have the ability to work closely with multiple audiences (both technical and functional) including chemical engineers as well as executive leadership.  This individual will be able to lead projects through its many stages and ensure that all the necessary work and approvals are completed before moving forward.  This will require someone who is not a “cog in the wheel” nor someone who ignores issues.  A strong candidate would have a chemical engineering background with experience within a plant from both a people and process perspective.  An individual with Global experience, and comfort reporting both “on the fly” as well as preparing a formal presentation deck will be the type of candidate that will rise to the top of our consideration pool.  Strong interpersonal skills, both verbal and written will be a ticket to entry for this role.

Position Requirements


  • BS in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Process Engineering
  • MBA or Master Degree in technical field is highly desired
  • 10+ years of experience in manufacturing plant operations
  • With progressive management experience indicating success through influence, persuasion, negotiation, coaching and counseling
  • Strong Project engineering/management experience (technical and operational)
  • Experience in both manufacturing and sales/marketing is a plus
  • Excellent safety record – proactively supporting and recognizing safe operating practices
  • Chemical manufacturing experience is needed, knowledge of Organic Peroxides is a plus
  • Capability to grasp technical issues, to interface with R&D, Process technology, Engineering as well as manufacturing organizations
  • Capability to understand, anticipate and fulfill Executive level expectations
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills
  • Available for frequent travelling
  • Ability to work in an international environment
  • Previous experience in chemical manufacturing
  • Previous experience working on and managing large project implementation
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with external organizations (industry groups, customers, regulatory agencies)
  • Strategic thinker; strong business acumen; ability to lead in a matrix organization
  • Ability to develop strategies and action plans for departmental activities and to implement time lines for completion
  • Ability to make tough decisions and manage through difficult, high stress situations
  • High capability to work within matrix organization
  • Strong PC skills, including MS Office software and MS Project
