Job Summary

Reporting to the Mine Manager, the Technical Services Superintendent is responsible for establishing safe, environmentally responsible, technically sound, and economically feasible plans for the development and exploitation of the Western Mesquite ore body. The incumbent accomplishes this by managing the mine engineering and geology groups so that they function as a cohesive, coordinated, goal-directed unit. Working closely with and guiding Mine Operations in the safe delivery of the plans. 

 

Essential Functions

Health and Safety

  • Knows responsibilities related to WMMI’s Emergency Response Plan (ERP)
  • Learns and administers all company and legislated policies and procedures
  • Ensures each crew follows company and legislated safety rules and procedures
  • Contributes to the department’s health and safety goals and objectives
  • Provides content for, monitors and maintains effective pre-shift and monthly safety meetings
  • Responds to safety concerns and/or unsafe conditions, and takes corrective action, or seeks assistance in doing so
  • Conducts monthly workplace inspections and hazard assessments of areas of responsibility, identifies and implements corrective and preventive actions
  • Ensures accident / incident investigations are completed
  • Makes appropriate safety equipment available to meet department requirements
  • Ensures each shift meets documentation, reporting, and, follow up requirements

 

Environment

  • Knows responsibilities related to WMMI’s Environmental Management System (EMS)
  • Contributes to the department’s environmental goals and objectives
  • Ensures each crew follows company and legislated environmental rules and procedures
  • Fosters awareness of environmental issues among employees
  • Conducts monthly environmental inspections of areas of responsibility, identifies and implements corrective and preventive actions
  • Ensures department activities prevent or mitigate the effects of pollution
  • Ensures environmental concerns are addressed
  • Responds to environmental concerns and takes corrective action, or seeks assistance in doing so
  • Ensures each shift meets documentation, reporting, and, follow up requirements
  • Follows company standards and guidelines for spill reporting and response

Departmental

  • Manages the geological and geotechnical engineering functions including on-site exploration
  • Manages the development of the annual and LOM plans
  • Monitors mine development progress, identifies deviations and recommends corrective action
  • Oversees implementation of the medium and long-term mine plans
  • Monitors and reports on regulatory compliance of mining activities
  • Reviews department costs, explains variances, and identifies cost reduction opportunities
  • Generates monthly, quarterly, and annual reports on Engineering and Mine Department performance
  • Develops and recommends operating procedures
  • Maintains operating standards
  • Ensures Load & Haul runs are up to date at all times for the daily shift calculation of ton miles.
  • Validates these run parameters on a regular basis through’ driving the route’.
  • Ensures Operation Shift Plans fit with the overall Mine Plan
  • Reviews shift results with the Operations Team.

Cost Control

  • Manages spending within approved budget
  • Approves spending up to authorized limits
  • Ensures departmental compliance with accounting procedures

Communication

  • Maintains effective information exchange with related departments
  • Keeps departmental staff informed

Training and Development

  • Supervises the development, delivery and documentation of training programs
  • Coordinates the scheduling, delivery and documentation of all other employee training
  •  

    Human Resource Management and Employee Relations

  • Recommends staffing requirements and participates in the hiring process
  • Evaluates staff performance and provides feedback
  • Conducts annual staff performance and salary reviews

Business Improvement

  • Recommends BI initiatives
  • Oversees implementation of approved initiatives
  • Coordinates goals setting program for area of responsibility and achieves goals
 
Position Requirements

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mining or Geology
  • 8 years of mining industry experience with 3 year of experience in a senior engineer level; 5 years experience in conventional truck/shovel open pit operation.
