Mine Maintenance Superintendent

Reporting to the Mine Manager, the Maintenance Superintendent is responsible for safe, environmentally responsible, efficient and effective multi-shift maintenance activities. This is accomplished by managing the Mine Maintenance Department, by partnering with the Engineering Department to have input into the mine plan, by partnering with the Operations Department to ensure maximum availability of equipment and facilities, and by organizing and directing maintenance crews so that they function as a cohesive, coordinated goal-directed unit. 


Essential Functions

 Health and Safety

  • Knows responsibilities related to WMMI’s Emergency Response Plan (ERP)
  • Learns and administers all company and legislated policies and procedures
  • Ensures each crew follows company and legislated safety rules and procedures
  • Contributes to the department’s health and safety goals and objectives
  • Provides content for, monitors and maintains effective pre-shift and monthly safety meetings
  • Responds to safety concerns and/or unsafe conditions,  and takes corrective action, or seeks assistance in doing so
  • Conducts monthly workplace inspections and hazard assessments of areas of responsibility, identifies and implements corrective and preventive actions
  • Ensures accident / incident investigations are completed
  • Makes appropriate safety equipment available to meet department requirements
  • Ensures each shift meets documentation, reporting, and, follow up requirements



  • Knows responsibilities related to WMMI’s Environmental Management System (EMS)
  • Contributes to the department’s environmental goals and objectives
  • Ensures each crew follows company and legislated environmental rules and procedures
  • Fosters awareness of environmental issues among employees
  • Conducts monthly environmental inspections of areas of responsibility, identifies and implements corrective and preventive actions
  • Ensures department activities prevent or mitigate the effects of pollution
  • Ensures environmental concerns are addressed
  • Responds to environmental concerns and takes corrective action, or seeks assistance in doing so
  • Ensures each shift meets documentation, reporting, and, follow up requirements
  • Follows company standards and guidelines for spill reporting and response



  • Achieves production maintenance operational objectives by contributing production maintenance information and recommendations to strategic plans and reviews; preparing and completing action plans; implementing production, productivity, quality, and customer-service standards; resolving problems; completing audits; identifying trends; implementing change.
  • Meets production maintenance financial objectives by forecasting requirements; provides information for annual budget; scheduling expenditures; analyzing variances; initiating corrective actions.
  • Provide top-level assistance and advice to the Management Team.
  • Develop and direct maintenance production programs and procedures ensuring optimum production effectiveness with efficient use of resources
  • Establish the overall strategy for maintenance using input from other departments and employees.
  • Develop and direct the implementation of operational programs, procedures and policies to meet governance requirements and standards.
  • Develop and direct the implementation and administration of the maintenance strategies and objectives.
  • Establish a maintenance production budget including information from the overall mine budget and business plan objectives.
  • Develop/Lead a Reliability Culture within mine maintenance
  • Recommend short and long term plans to improve efficiency and cost effectiveness of maintenance operations.
  • Research options and implement processes to ensure best practices for maintenance activities
  • Stay current with mining laws and safety regulations ensuing that direct reports are in compliance with established guidelines.
  • Provide leadership to the Maintenance Team
  • Take a leading role in the employment and development of staff.
  • Ensure ongoing effective management of staff by setting clear performance goals, providing regular feedback and development through training.
  • Ensure direct reports are developed, trained and coached to obtain optimum efficiencies.
  • Ensure there is the necessary manpower and equipment available to meet production targets and at the same time maintain costs within the established budget guidelines.
  • Ensure direct reports are assisted to achieve their full potential.

Cost Control

  • Manages spending within approved budget
  • Approves spending up to authorized limits
  • Ensures departmental compliance with accounting procedures



  • Maintains effective information exchange with related departments
  • Keeps departmental staff informed


Training and Development

  • Supervises the development, delivery and documentation of training programs
  • Coordinates the scheduling, delivery and documentation of all other employee training


Human Resource Management and Employee Relations

  • Recommends staffing requirements and participates in the hiring process
  • Evaluates staff performance and provides feedback
  • Conducts annual staff performance and salary reviews


Business Improvement

  • Recommends BI initiatives
  • Oversees implementation of approved initiatives
  • Coordinates goals setting program for area of responsibility and achieves goals
Position Requirements

Education and Experience .

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 15 Years of mining industry with 5 years of experience in a maintenance execution role at management level

Skill, Knowledge and Ablities:

  • Strong management and Total Productive Maintenance
  • Six Sigma
  • Ability to lead teams
  • Attention to detail with excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to identify, analyze and solve problems
  • Ability to prepare accurate records and reports
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with internal and external contacts
  • Ability to work with all levels of the organization
  • Reliability Centered Maintenance Background
  • Sound knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Programs
  • Excellent safety awareness and leadership
  • Demonstrated competency in preventative, predictive, basic care practices, and computerized maintenance management systems.
  • Working knowledge of SAP preferred.
  • Excellent system skills with Excel, VISO, Project
