Stewardship Intern 


General Purpose:

The mission of the Pitkin County Open Space and Trails (OST) program is to acquire, preserve, maintain and manage open space properties for multiple purposes including, but not limited to, recreational, wildlife, agricultural, scenic and access purposes; and to acquire, preserve, develop, maintain and manage trails for similar purposes.  The intern’s general purpose is to support the OST staff with stewardship of properties and easements and further the mission of the OST program.

Essential Functions:

The following duty statements are illustrative of the essential functions of the job and do not include other non-essential or marginal duties that may be required. Pitkin County reserves the right to modify or change the duties or essential functions of this job at any time.

  • As a member of the Open Space and Trails (OST) team, provide support to help OST achieve its strategic goals and vision.
  • Assist in the monitoring of open space agricultural properties and conservation and fishing easements.
  • Assist in the implementation of management plans and other property specific projects.
  • Assist with taking field measurements, gathering data and map creation.
  • Assist with management plan development, this could include helping with public meetings and outreach.

Other Functions:

  • Maintains regular and reliable attendance.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Scope of Authority:

This is an internship position. There will be creative freedom on assigned tasks but the goal of the position is to learn about and be exposed to all facets of the Open Space and Trails program while assisting full time staff with project implementation and stewardship activities. 

Interpersonal Contacts: 

Interfaces with all levels of County personnel, Elected Officials, Governmental Entities, external organizations/consultants/tenants/contractors/vendors, and the general public.

Supervision Received:

Works under the direction of the Agriculture and Conservation Easement Administrator.

Material and Equipment Directly Used:

General office equipment, GPS unit, camera, iPad.

Software:  MS Office Suite of applications, Google applications, Internet Explorer, Adobe Creative Suite, GIS and others as defined by manager.

Position Requirements

Job Qualifications:

Education/Formal Training and Experience:

  • Must be enrolled in an environmental management, parks and protected area management, natural resources, conservation, or related field program in an accredited college.
  • Must be able to receive credits for internship from their college program. 

Licenses, Certifications, and Other Requirements:

  • Valid Drivers’ License.
  • Acceptable Motor Vehicle Record.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • General ecosystem functions and conservation concepts.
  • GIS and mapping programs.

Skill in:

  • Working collaboratively.
  • Thinking critically.
  • Self-motivation.
  • Using tact, discretion, initiative and independent judgment within established guidelines.
  • Organizing work, setting priorities, meeting critical deadlines, and following up on assignments with minimal direction.
  • Applying logical thinking to solve problems and accomplish tasks.

Mental and Physical Abilities:

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a wide variety of individuals.
  • Ability to multitask and be flexible.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of professionalism.
  • Ability to read and interpret maps and planning documents.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions and explain their implications.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, orally and in writing.

Work Environment:

  • Work is performed in a normal environment, office and outdoor time, with seasonal exposure to outdoor weather conditions. 
  • Must be able to occasionally work evenings but work weeks will not exceed 40 hours a week.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to hike and/or bike up to several miles a day on uneven terrain with a backpack and equipment.

Hiring Range:

$13.00 per hour
