Description

The dean of students is a strategic institutional leader and the school’s primary student affairs expert. The position is a twelve-month administrative position responsible for overseeing and facilitating all nonacademic aspects of student life at George School in a way that ensures their complementarity to the academic program and supports the holistic approach to student development that characterizes George School. The dean of students will lead efforts to evaluate and, as necessary and desirable, reimagine student life with the goal of ensuring George School is an environment conducive to academic achievement and personal growth for boarding and day students. Such a vision is consistent with George School’s position as a leading boarding and day school rooted in Quaker values. Key areas of responsibility include residential and day student programs, student activities including weekend programming, the attendance system, the discipline system, student health and wellness, support of international students, and budgetary oversight for student life programs. In addition, the dean of students will occasionally serve as an institutional spokesperson on student-related matters. The dean of students supervises all staff members of the Deans’ Office, is a member of George School’s administrative team of senior institutional leaders and reports to the associate head of school. Campus housing is provided to the dean of students.

 
Position Requirements
  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree is required, with preference for a Master’s degree in an academic field taught at George School or in education administration or a related discipline.

  • A minimum of three years of successful professional experience in a boarding school is required.

  • At least three years’ experience supervising both adults and adolescents is required.

  • At least three years administering student life programs is highly desired.

  • The ability to teach a class at George School is desirable.

  • Demonstrated knowledge in such areas as developmental psychology, residential life, drug and alcohol prevention, experiential education, ethics and decision-making.

  • A commitment to the traditions and philosophy of a Quaker educational community and a style consistent with Quaker values.

  • The ability to lead by example in a community that expects collegiality and open communication.

  • Commitment to diversity and demonstrated ability to work successfully with diverse student and adult populations.

  • Ability to articulate and tactfully handle inquiries from students, parents, faculty, and staff.

  • Discretion and the ability to maintain confidentiality.

  • Willingness and ability to work evenings and weekends are required.
