SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Vice President of Sales the Thrift Store Manager is directly responsible for continued operational success of Opportunity Village’s Thrift Store. This includes leading staff, volunteers, individuals served; managing sales, donations of merchandise, promotion of the store in the community, and internal fiscal controls. The Thrift Store Manager ensures vocational training and support for workers with disabilities are received to fulfill program goals and meet budget requirements.  

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  3. Maintain excellent standards in all areas of retail and processing operational activity; drive sales and profitability through the development of performance plans and goals.
  4. Projects, develops and implements an effective operational budget.
  5. Prepares monthly variance report with analysis and detailed justification.
  6. Supervises and trains all staff and individuals served regarding all areas of retail sales, customer service and donation processing.
  7. Ensures compliance with established policies and procedures.
  8. Oversees the processing of donated items, manages the rotation of items and the disposal of donated items in a timely fashion to ensure a reasonable financial return on the sale of store items.
    • This includes: sorting, tagging, displaying and disposing of donated items, sets standards for merchandise and communicates this to staff, generating and boosting sales, merchandising, processing, pricing, cash register operations (POS system),
  9. Assists with Marketing and Resource Development teams to implement a high quality of public relations and advertising to achieve a continuous increase of retail sales.
  10. Establish and maintain systems for monitoring key elements of all operations including quality of service, customer satisfaction, compliance and cost efficiency.
  11. Actively participates in the trade show and donation drives to attain donated goods for store.
  12. Responsible for the development of merchandising changes and trends; maintains a clean and fresh look of the retail floor.
  13. Acts as subject matter expert of inventory control and shrink related issues; Responsible for the protection of property and building through implementing appropriate loss prevention measures.
  14. Ensure compliance with program objectives, agency policy and procedures, Health and Safety/OSHA regulations as well as State and Federal Regulations.
  15. Support Individual Program Plan (ISP)/Vocational Plans to ensure they are implemented on a day-to-day basis and collaborate with Career Opportunity Advocate as needed to support vocational training and fulfillment of plans and goals.
  16. Develop and implement procedures for store operations including: store opening, closing, accepting, sorting, and pricing donations; security procedures for staff, handling of cash, and other relevant procedures as needed.
  17. Develops schedules for staff to maintain adequate personnel at the store to accomplish tasks and respond to customers.
  18. Responsible for maintaining and increasing store sales as projected by budget and goals set with Administration.
  19. Perform other duties as assigned

SUPERVISEORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position supervises all thrift store clients, volunteers and staff. 

 
Position Requirements

SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Ability to communicate effectively with customers, vendors, individuals, co-workers and supervisors (verbal and written).
  • Ability to respond and work with individuals with developmental disabilities.
  • Must encompass professional demeanor and excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to define problems and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret instructions, gain knowledge and have initiative.
  • Computer literate.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of retail store management.
  • Strong customer service expertise and community outreach ability including relationships with donors.
  • Ability to evaluate overall store operations in order to detect deficiencies and implement appropriate corrective action.
  • Ability to price donated merchandise reasonably and fairly.
  • Ability to assess emergency situations and act in an appropriate and therapeutic manner.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Required: Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Sales, Marketing or related field or equivalent.
  • Required: Five to ten years’ experience in a retail management role.
  • Required: A valid Driver’s License and a clean driving history.
  • Preferred: Experience in Thrift Store Operations. 
  • Preferred: Prior experience working with individuals with intellectual disabilities.

  • Ability to tolerate stress in customer facing position and conduct tasks successfully under critical deadlines.
