Assistant Controller

Description

Under the direction of the Site Operations Controller, performs moderately to complex accounting and financial activities in accordance with international financial reporting standards and Western Mesquite Mines, Inc. policies and procedures.  

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in preparation and oversight of monthly financial close processes including reviewing monthly cost reports and analysis.
  • Prepare and/or oversee routine and non-routine financial transactions such as journal entries, bank reconciliations, bulk inventory calculations and adjustments, wire transfers incoming and outgoing.
  • Review and manage monthly reconciliation of balance sheet and selected revenue and expense accounts.
  • Review and manage the accounts payable processes to ensure timely payment of invoices, ensure resolution to goods received not invoiced and problem invoices.
  • Supervise and manage delegated staff.
  • Oversee the accounting and controls for the dorè and concentrate process.
  • Provide support and customer service to other positions including accounting, purchasing, warehouse and other departments.
  • Assist/oversee adequate internal controls are in place to safeguard company’s assets, and assist/oversee adequate documentation is provided to auditors (internal and external) and assist/oversee governmental reporting requirements such as sales and use tax, 1099’s, etc.
  • Assist site operation controller as needed including researching various issues, preparation of annual budget, quarterly forecasts, financial reporting, management reporting, etc.
  • Perform other duties as required.

 

 
Position Requirements
  • Minimum Education (or substitute experience) required:  Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration or closely related area and enrolled in a designated accounting program or having a professional designation (CA/CGA/CMA/CPA). Preference will be given to those candidates that already have an accounting designation.
  • Minimum Experience Required:  Three plus years progressive accounting experience with a mid-size company preferably in the mining sector.
  • Skills Required:  Strong knowledge in SAP specifically in the areas of FICO. Excellent critical thinking skills and the ability to communicate effectively both in writing and verbally.  Excellent analytical skills and a high level of initiative.   A good working knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles.  Proven experience documenting and analyzing internal controls.  The ability to improve processes and procedures.  Very strong MS Excel skills and proven experience developing reports, providing analysis of operations and clearly communicating the results of your analysis.  Great organization skills.  Strong interpersonal abilities allowing the development and maintaining of all levels of business relationships.  Knowledge of IFRS is preferred. Experience performing account reconciliations are able to work independently. Strong time management skills, team oriented, highly motivated and enjoy working in a dynamic environment.
