This is your opportunity to join a dynamic Education team at Woodland Park Zoo. Applications are now being accepted for Volunteer Engagement Coordinator in the Volunteer & Community Engagement department. There is one full-time, regular, benefited position to be filled at this time.

SUMMARY

This position is part of our Volunteer and Community Engagement team and focuses on connecting adult community members with volunteer opportunities. The person in this position coordinates functions, logistics and activities for a volunteer program which currently has over 1,000 participants. This position will work in close collaboration with other volunteer coordinators (adult and youth) to share overlapping coordination efforts including day-to-day volunteer supervision, support, recognition and communication. The ideal candidate will possess volunteer engagement experience as well as a background working with individuals from diverse (socio economic, cultural, special needs, etc.) communities. Being multilingual with fluency in a language other than English is a plus.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee volunteer recruitment by leading volunteer information sessions and interfacing with prospective new volunteers; take lead on scheduling and conducting prospective volunteer interviews and background checks.
  • Oversee logistics of onboarding new volunteers including coordinating training content which includes a basic introduction to the zoo’s mission and philosophy, field conservation programs, volunteer logistics, safety and emergency information and customer service expectations; conduct segments of training
  • Coordinate individuals or groups volunteers (non-education) for both on and off-site events and programming; conduct event info sessions for volunteers.
  • Oversee Jungle Party (major fundraising event) volunteer recruitment, training and coordination, including managing Jungle Party volunteer team leads in coordination with development staff.
  • Work directly with and take responsibility for volunteer leadership committees including a volunteer events team that supports all major events at the zoo.
  • Working with departments across the zoo, oversee placement/coordination/ongoing support of volunteers in various specialty positions (horticulture, office, Animal Health, administration, outreach).
  • Plan and implement safety and customer service annual refreshers for volunteers
  • Responsible for administrative tasks within the volunteer office including maintaining volunteer database (Volgistics), volunteer uniform inventory and updating all volunteer forms.
  • Safeguard the confidentiality of volunteer information at all times. Maintain and adhere to policies around information gathering and sharing in accordance with professional ethics standards.
  • Working in close team relationship with other volunteer coordinators, share overlapping coordination efforts including day-to-day volunteer supervision and support, clear communication to volunteers through a variety of media, and assist with quarterly and annual recognition events.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Ability to work a non-standard/flexible schedule, to include one weekend day  and some evenings

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor's degree (B. A. or B.S.) from an accredited four-year college or university; and 2 years related experience and/or training in volunteer coordination; or equivalent combination of education and experience. 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Certificate in Volunteer Administration (CVA), or interest in obtaining, is preferred, but not required.

COMPUTER SKILLS

Proficient and experienced with Microsoft Office applications; particularly Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and. Must be able to work with customized databases and technology. Experience with Volgistics is a plus.

CUSTOMER SERVICE SKILLS

Must be enthusiastic and customer service oriented and deal with clients in a courteous and professional manner. Enjoy working with the public including diverse populations and people of all ages.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to write reports, business correspondence and training materials. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from clients, customers, and the general public. Ability to develop talks for presentations and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to speak a language in addition to English is a plus.

MATHEMATICAL ABILITY

Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent, and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, and is located in a multiple-person office and amidst multiple interactions with volunteers and staff throughout the work day. The employee is occasionally exposed to outdoor weather conditions.
